So, I can't say that I hate the show, but my honest opinion is that it's really not all that well written. While I do understand it's meant to be more of a campy action SyFy show, the characters lack depth. I was looking for something with a strong female lead and this show was recommended, but it really falls short of that, at least in my opinion. Staying true to form, like a lot of sci fi themed shows, so many unnecessary problems could be avoided if time wasn't wasted trying to make not-so-pity remarks that leave you rolling your eyes and groaning, "Just figure your sh!% out already!" And the phrase "baby girl" can, and is, used much too frequently.Additionally there were 2 things that bothered me a little with the storyline at the basic foundation. Maybe it's because I'm a history/etymology nerd, but I've read that "Winona" means "first-born daughter" in Dakota, but it's clearly given to a middle child, with a spelling modification. The other, more pressing peeve, is that Wyatt Earp never had any children that lived and it's actually documented pretty well by a cousin of Wyatt's. I suppose there's always a chance of illegitimate offspring, but there's not much documented proof of that either. Descendant of the Earp clan, cool, I can get behind that claim. Great-great granddaughter of Wyatt Earp? Not so much.

I watched the first half-season hoping for this to become something it never became, while also watching most of SyFy's other scripted shows (as well as the other networks). One by one the other shows have disappeared - the most recent being The Expanse (though Amazon picked it up, thank goodness) and Colony (on USA Network, but, like SyFy, owned by NBC Universal) - however this collection of bad writing and acting is still going strong.Thank goodness Van Helsing and Killjoys are still around on SyFy (though it's unclear how long that will continue, since it seemed touch-and-go for both after last season), because they are worth the time to keep watching (and yes, they both have strong female leads, so that's not my issue with Earp - Earp is just bad). Not sure why there are all the 10s for this show, unless there is some other motive by those reviewers. The pilot was universally panned, and those involved with the series never seem interested in improving things.Hopefully SyFy will find something better with which to replace this after this season.

So, the easiest way to describe this to the unfamiliar is to just say it's Supernatural with a pair of sisters in the lead instead of brothers. That's not all it is, but it's an easy shorthand. The similarities are pretty good though: - Two siblings killing demons and so on ...using the magic Colt that used to be their dad's ...with the help of their friend who is basically immortal (Doc/Cas) ...and the local police ...and a mysterious official organization (BBD/eventually Men of Letters) that isn't 100% 'good guys' **mild spoiler** - Family member killed in the prologue/raison d'etre of the series reappears at one pointAnyway, that is not to say I disliked the show! I just was skeptical out of the gate, but I'm always up for some popcorn- munching entertainment, and I think it delivered. Wynonna Earp's got its own charm and eventually gives in to its natural humor instead of taking itself seriously. It's not high art, but it doesn't need to be; it's fun TV. The attractive redhead Waverly falls for has the last name of 'Haught', for pun's sake!Starring literally zero people I had ever seen or heard of before, I had no particular expectations of the acting quality, but I have to say that Tim Rozon is great as the unaging Doc Holliday - just a little more gruff than the benchmark set by Val Kilmer lo those many years ago, and I think perfectly so considering his circumstances in the setting of Wynonna. Melanie Scrofano does fine as the titular Earp heiress, drinking and swearing a bit but still far more together than anyone seems to think she could be with said drinking problem. Some people do come across as obviously Canadian with their accents and speech patterns, but most are fine. The demon fare from the first season largely being taken over by bigger/badder and weirder monsters for the second, feels like a budget and story expansion that was placed and paced appropriately (the creepiest monsters are always the human ones! e.g. Tucker), and season 2 ends on ye olde cliffhanger moment we've gotten used to from other shows. I *did* have to draw a mental line at the silliness of the climax moment of the final battle with the Widows. You know the moment I mean, if you saw it. *eyes rolling so hard I can see my brain*But still, it's fun to watch and I look forward to the next season.
