phyre_Iyz This show would have received a 7 from me because it's a fun show to watch. The issue I have with it is its total lack of authenticity to the Long Island. The beaches are a tan colored sand (Long Island sand is white), there is mountainous landscape in the horizon over the water which I assume is the Long Island Sound off the east end (I don't think Connecticut has mountains), the towns look more like upper New England rather than a Long Island shore town. The producers did a poor job in set location and building. This, I believe, is a huge contributing factor as to why the show didn't last more than two seasons. It's a shame they didn't do more than 15 minutes worth of homework on Long Island because it would have been nice to see an honest representation of the Hamptons. The clean, crisp style that area is known for; the beachy decor that should be everywhere. I haven't read the books so perhaps that where the fault lies. Good Reads says the locale is North Hampton, when it's Northampton. Maybe the author of the series should have done her own homework better.
Phylum22 I was looking forward to this. When it first aired I was horrified. The house they lived in was so obviously copied from Charmed. This I could have overlooked if it had turned out to be so much better than it was.During the very first episode nearly everything about the family was told, leaving little to learn. The two sisters were so badly cast, one very pretty and dark, the other mousy and plain. The action was over the top and came thick and fast which I found plain silly. All in all I found this programme to be cheap and nasty. I watched maybe four episodes and gave up. I felt very disappointed by the whole thing. I really think this show was spoiled totally, it could have been so good.Hearing it was cancelled was no surprise to me. Dreadful!
paulamoon36 Not since "Charmed" have I enjoyed a supernatural show that is specifically targeted for women. The blend of comedy, dark plots, family tension, romance and supernatural activity has me enthralled: it is pure escapism and this is what a TV show should be about. A story is told and it should involve the viewer completely. The actresses and actors are well matched and the writing is solid enough to show continuation in the plot lines. The complexity of all the character interactions are full on and one would hope that as new elements are introduced, old links are tied up properly. I will hope that this great series continues for another few seasons at least. The enjoyment factor is a good 10/10 for me!
Vincent Black Many have called this a carbon copy of "Charmed". I don't think it is a carbon copy, more like a color Xerox. The novel is actually quite a bit different but not much better. But I am not here to review the book, just the ten episodes I managed to endure on Netflix. I don't think I will bother with viewing season two.First the dialog in this is horrible. I don't know anyone who attends a fancy engagement party and opens a conversation with blood sacrifices and satanic orgies. Most of the time the dialog has no subtext, it is flat and boring. There is so much repetition, in just the first few episodes, it gets hard to count how many times you hear someone say, "I lied." then the other person respond, "You lied to me?!". Finally exposition abounds in this series. The characters are transparent as glass. The players are a bit too bland and obvious. There is no good guys to cheer for or evil villains to taunt. Most everyone are homicidal, nut jobs, vengeful associates, or partners trying to coerce each other. This is normal fodder for any daytime soap in my opinion. Now as for similarities to "Charmed" two sisters who are not told of their true nature, suddenly find out they are magical creatures. They have evil past lives. Witches can't do just any old magic spell, they have special abilities. Sort of like "X-Men" they are portrayed more like mutants than witches. They live in a manor house similar in layout both interior and exterior right down to the color. Rules on magic are the same, spells of personal gain causes a backlash. A good criminal attorney is not only evil but immortal. I could go on but then I would have to attach a spoiler warning. In the end, "Witches of East End" is a waste of time. As I said, I only endured the first season to write out an honest review. Many series can have a poor episode or two per season and I didn't want to base this only on the pilot or a scant few. This series is awful from start to finish.
