brittbrat-11659 Wish they wouldn't have canceled it, loved the few episodes that were on and was so sad when it never came back and I heard it was canceled. Please bring back!!
navtec I know it was canceled already. I don't really care why but my vote would be "just plain stupid." It starts off sort of OK with a short 1893 setting full of 1893 people then moves to modern day. The characters are likable and pretty like all TV people. The plot begins to twist which is also something to applaud. The bad guy is even believable and convincing. Then comes the part where this New Yorker makes some good moves to reconcile the dilemma of the moment...and the writers all quit leaving the show to be decided by talent-less executive types. I just couldn't keep watching because I knew there would be one stupid move after another to keep the story on course. Write it better. Come up with better ideas instead of the cliché. If you like simple, like King of Queens simple then this would be a fair show. 7.9. I don't think so.***SPOILERS HERE BELOW*** Our heroine, Jane clocks the ripper with a candy bowl "once". Sneaks past his moaning body with the damsel in peril and heads out the door only to be re-captured in less than 10 seconds. Anyone else would have beaten the schmuck with the bowl at least until he stopped moaning and moving. Then a much more interesting thing could have happened like when the police arrive his body was missing. Another dilemma could be set up and even more suspense added making a better show. One thing, why did he turn his back on her in the first place? He is from 1893 where women were window dressing that posed no threat.
perplexio-2 The 1979 movie is pretty decent and has aged reasonably well. And I know, based on the quality of the writing from many shows on the major networks that the writers for those networks are writing for the lowest common denominator of intelligence. They assume the audience's lack of intelligence....But to make a rookie historical mistake... HG and Jane watching a YouTube clip of World War I (yes World War ONE: 1914-1918) newsreel footage with the SOUNDS of explosions?!?!?! First talkie, "The Jazz Singer" didn't come out until 1927... well after WWI ended. While there is likely newsreel footage of WWI out there it would have been completely silent. Also when HG and Jane go back to 1980 she tells him to mention greed and Madonna, she also says that Reagan is president... Madonna wasn't known at all until the mid 80s... People at a 1980s garden party would not have known who Madonna was... Also, Ronald Reagan was ELECTED in 1980, he didn't take office until January of 1981. The president in 1980 was still Jimmy Carter. An average 21st century person might make such mistakes but Jane is supposed to be a historian. If she's THAT bad a historian, I don't know how she has a job working at a museum. This show has/had so much potential. The acting is even halfway decent and I have to give credit to the actors for trying to salvage something from some truly poor writing. I might try to finish out the first season, but barring a miraculous improvement in the writing I won't be back for season 2.
steve_r-1 I actually quite like this program- it's entertaining enough, the acting is surprisingly good and the premise isn't bad (the movie is excellent). There is some massive flaws though H.G and the Ripper have both adapted to the twenty first century as if they've only jumped 5-10 years not 129!!!! In the first episode John went to the pawn shop as if he'd been at one many times before and seemed to already know what his pawn was worth in the 21st century. They had no problems with mobile phones, laptops etc and worst of all recognised round security cameras that were designed to look like lights!! Hmmm is all this stuff standard in 1888?? The guys also seem a little too clean cut for 19th century men looking like they've just finished surfing at the beach. If you want to turn off your brain and not think too much about these things then you'll enjoy yourself otherwise it'll set your OCD into overdrive oh and did I mention that the woman who plays Jane just happens to be the most gorgeous woman on TV?? No?? Well she is!!!
