monesque Simply brilliant, this is one of the best written police procedurals that has appeared in some time. Maybe nothing like it since Prime Suspect. Carefully plotted and filmed, it takes the familiar---serial killer obsessed with sex--and makes it special. It has some nods to, say, Criminal Minds, but it has the time to be far more elegantly and intricately plotted. Beautifully acted, it is also a revelation for Gillian Anderson's performance. If all you know is the X-Files, you know how wasted she was in that stilted role that required very little range. She is so much better here and so much more interesting. I was, by the way, wondering about the accent enough to look it up--to my surprise, she spent a lot of time in the UK growing up and comes by a UK accent naturally. Anyway....All in all, if you like the genre, you shouldn't miss this. It's unforgettable.
espenbreen I have never fallen asleep so many times during a series. It is just too slow for me. And so silent as well. The extra start because when it's on, (mostly during s1) it's quite exciting and thrilling. S1 is ok, S2 is "meh", S3 is absolute nope.
Jake Bergen This is a well acted show with a plot that kept me interested, but the long, drawn out lulls grew tiresome. They could have made the show significantly better (and a number of episodes shorter) by just cutting out long, slow shots that cut back and forth to people thinking that were likely meant to build suspense but did the opposite by getting boring, and added nothing to character development. Sometimes the show seemed that it couldn't decide what it wanted to be, there is one episode that came across as a medical drama and was completely inconsistent with the other episodes and added almost nothing to the story. Good show, worth watching, but is made better if you can fast forward the tedious bits.
terrystatz I watched the first 2 episodes. After the first one I liked it. There is some female nudity in the first episode, which I hoped was just there to capture male viewers' interest to continue the series. After watching the second episode, I decided to quit. A major problem is that Gillian Anderson's character is not likable. Neither is Jamie Dornan's character, and you need someone to like in every show. Peripheral characters are better, but none stood out. Also, a little female nudity doesn't bother me, but the scenes of the female victim's naked body for long periods in the 2nd episode, along with a sex scene showing partial female nudity (but no male nudity), was too much. Yes, you see a tiny bit of Jamie Dornan's backside in one episode, but this show definitely caters to men. And back to Gillian Anderson, as another reviewer wrote, she needs to extend her range. If they had cut back on the nudity, and had a good, likeable main character, I would have stuck with it. The plot was interesting, but not enough.
