Kingdom Hearts and Sonic X. What do those two titles have in common? They both have very annoying and unlikable main protagonists who are original characters to their respective titles with already established characters for the sake of brand recognition and product placement. For example, Kingdom Hearts has our beloved characters from Walt Disney Animation Studios feature films with Sora, a character I hate with a passion. But that is besides the point. This review is about Sonic X, which is very similar to Kingdom Hearts, only difference being it is a series in television series form than video game. The Bad: 1. Christopher Thorndyke, the main protagonist, is a very unlikable and annoying character. What is even worse is the double standard of finding Sora from Kingdom Hearts likable, but not Chris Thorndyke. As a matter of fact, I really hate original characters made specifically for a certain title also featuring already established characters, and no, I do not mean sequels. Kingdom Hearts and Sonic X are two examples. 2. Another double standard that is finding the stories in Sonic X bad and the ones in Kingdom Hearts good, where both have the exact same concept! They both rehash stories from Sonic the Hedgehog games and Walt Disney Animation Studios movies, as well as creating pointless continuity inconsistencies to the already established characters with "fresh" stories. 3. Cosmo is not very likable either. What Cosmo, Chris Thorndyke and Sonic the Hedgehog characters are to Sonic X are exactly like Final Fantasy characters, Sora, and Disney characters are to Kingdom Hearts. Crossovers like that are pointless and create unnecessary confusion with continuity inconsistencies. The Mixed: 1. One of the biggest problems with Sonic the Hedgehog is the franchise's inconsistency with national identity, so when it comes to the voice acting, courtesy of Junichi Kanemaru, Ryo Hirohashi, Nobutoshi Kanna, Sayaka Aoki, Taeko Kawata, Sanae Kobayashi and Chikao Otsuka, it is really hard to tell whether it is good or bad, because international dubs are bad because they are nationalising a lot of elements in a foreign- language film or television series, even a simple translation is a nationalisation. Another reason why it is hard to tell whether the voice acting is good or bad is the sound of the voices from the characters, so overall, I am in the middle about the voice acting. It is neither good nor bad.The Good: 1. One of the few things I like about Sonic X is the original music composed by Yoshihiro Ike. I do not enjoy it as Sonic music, I enjoy it as music standing on its own merits. 2. The animation is aesthetically speaking, beautiful. The environments really look like a place I would want to explore.I know I have been comparing this television series to Kingdom Hearts, but that is how I honestly feel about Sonic X, as well as the best way to describe this series.Note: This review is based on the original Japanese with English subtitles.

It's 2015 and I haven't seen this cartoon in almost 10 years and I recently binge watched it this past Summer to give it a shot, and see what I missed. I sorta liked it as a kid. Now I never wanna see another episode of this sorry excuse of a cartoon ever again. The voice acting is tolerable and it has a catchy theme song (reason why I'm not giving it a 1) Like any dubbing for an American cartoon is any good anyway.80% of the episodes of Sonic X basically consist of the main humanoid character, Chris Thorndyke going to school and catching up to see how Sonic is doing and how Tails helps them find a way back home. Chris Thorndyke is an unlikable main character and Season 1 basically consisted of nothing but watching him and and his butler and lady servant, cook food and have tea. You know the typical first world problem stuff you see the rich do on a daily basis. It's not entertaining and Eggman (the main villain) is unknowingly absent in a few episodes of Season 1 making you question what direction this show is taking.Season 2 was basically a recreation of Sonic Adventure 1, 2 and Sonic Battle. By the time Season 2 started and they introduced Shadow The Hedgehog to the mix, I just had to stop watching. In the first few episodes where Shadow fought with Sonic, it was told through still shots, yes still shots. If you are expecting high octane, exhilarating, bright, colorful, memorable fights you are going to be disappointed with this show. It doesn't offer any of that.Still shots? In an anime that was made back in 2004? This is truly pathetic. Season 3 took place in space but, I had long couldn't withstand this show anymore. 2/10.

This show, while mediocre and highly flawed, doesn't deserve nearly as much scorn as it gets. Yes, I do understand that the 4kids version and all of the voice actors in it (except possibly Mike Pollock as Eggman) are annoying, Chris is the one of the worst characters ever though of and has way to much screen time, and Cosmo's character was somewhat lazy on the part of the writers. I also understand that you can't just glance at a show and review it. You have to understand what the heck you're doing, which is why I'd like to say that the show is really far from the worst. You may be asking why, so I'll tell you that (1) I have seen far worse shows... far worse (you watch Season 12 of Family Guy or Season 7 of SpongeBob and tell me that this show is even half as bad as the other 2, I freaking dare you) (2) Watch the following episodes of this show (the Japanese or French versions, don't listen to the 4kids voice acting - it's bad enough to make Break Up by Mario listenable) - Episodes 62 and 68. If there's no other episode that you feel you enjoy, those ones are the best in the series. If you can push back slight flaws and the presence of one or two annoying characters, I also recommend episodes 53, 73, 74, and quite a few of the ones from season 1 (How to Catch A Hedgehog, Chaos Control Freaks, that one with Knuckles and a guy who calls himself "Hawk", etc.).The episodes I mentioned have far less of Chris Thorndyke than most episodes, and even the ones with him being there for the majority of the time are mediocre at worst. The only episodes I have a problem with are the finales of season 2 and season 3. The former has Chris Thorndyke at his absolute worst, and the definitive example of why everyone hates him. The latter has... way to much unnecessary cruelty, even for Tragedy, and the unfortunate implications... there's so many.Other than those, I consider this show to be... mediocre, but leaning towards good. Cut out Chris Thorndyke and try harder, and the show could be really good... just please, try harder. Season 1 gets a 5/10, Season 2 gets a 4/10, and Season 3 gets a 7/10. Overall: 5/10

I haven't played the games for a while, but I do remember them being fun, exciting and just great in general. I will say I am a huge fan of Sonic the Hedgehog SatAM, it was very well animated, well written and the stories were always done in a unique, faithful and mature way. Plus you have Jim Cummings as Dr Robotnik, he was amazing as always. However, I was really disappointed in Sonic X.It started off brilliantly, with a wonderful first couple of episodes, good music with exception of the theme tune and a great concept, and then it all went downhill just like that.My first major problem with Sonic X is that the characters are not well-developed. That is with the exception of Chris, but the thing is there is too much of him, and not enough of Sonic and everyone else. Sonic in the SatAM series had a personality, and a unique one at that, but that personality doesn't come across here. And later Chris gets really annoying and obnoxious. Secondly, the animation quality is uneven, in the first episode it was fine, but as the series progressed it became jerky, rushed and lacking in crispness and vibrancy. Thirdly, the story lines are not as well thought out or as gripping, some of the episodes here are poorly structured and even have major contradictions to the games. Fourthly, while I liked the incidental music, the theme tune I did not like, I for one didn't find it catchy or memorable and later it even got annoying. Fifthly, the writing lacks intelligence and verve, the villain Dr.Eggman(or shall I say Dr Robotnik) especially has some lame dialogue that didn't make sense. Finally, I didn't find the English dub voice work that great, the actors try their best with superficial material but with the characters so underdeveloped nobody stands out.Overall, disappointing, started off great, but as the show progressed the flaws became increasingly abundant. 3/10 Bethany Cox
