Reviews

Theofilos Arapidis This is a review about the first 2 seasons, since i haven't watched the third season yet(which most people say is the best of all 3).Before starting watching it,i had read so many bad reviews, but it came out that it isn't that bad at all.Sure it is much different from the classic Sailor Moon since it follows the exact story of the manga but it has a lot of pros. For example, the transformations and some battle scenes are way more impressive than on the classic one,as well as the city and the Sailors' houses.Another thing that i liked is that on the Crystal things happen much faster. All of the soldiers are gathered since the very first 8 episodes when on the classic one,on the first 8 episodes only Moon and Mercury had gathered. That's because it follows the manga like i said before. Also, the villains remain the same but the story line is a bit different(because of the manga again). For example,Kunzite,Zoisite,Nephrite and Jadeite used to be the guardians of Prince Endymion and each one of them used to be in love with each one of the rest of the sailor soldiers, when on the classic one they are just enemies and Kunzite is dating Zoisite.Another different thing that i liked is that Usagi's relationship with Luna is much more emotional and Luna doesn't scold Usagi like on the classic one and Rei doesn't pick on Usagi either, although that was a pretty funny thing. Also,on the Crystal one all Sailors can fly normally whenever they want, when on the classic one they would fly on some scenes but on some other ones they didn't do it even though they could a few scenes ago which made no sense. The cons are that the series isn't really funny at all and Usagi and Mina who are the most naive ones on the classic one are way more serious in here.Usagi still appears like a crybaby and stuff but not that much like on the classic one and Mina is way too serious. Also,i didn't like the fact that the four phantom sisters get killed one by one on every episode, when on the classic one they all became humans again. It's stuff like that that miss from the Sailor Moon Crystal and don't make it a 10 out of 10 like the classic one.Overall,if you are a fan of Sailor Moon and especially the manga, give it a try and watch it.But if you are full in love with the classic Sailor Moon and like it more than the manga, then don't watch it at all.
sailorspysedna Sailor Moon Crystal, as we all know, is a reboot of the original popular and successful Sailor Moon anime that deserves praise as one of the best anime series ever made, whatever flaws it has, along with the manga that is said to be one of the best manga series. This adaptation is said to be more closer to Naoko Takeuchi's original manga and is an awesome series....or is it? I suggest only watching Season 3, the Infinity arc, and not the other two seasons. Why? Well in seasons 1-2:The art and animation are abysmal, hopelessly bad beyond words. I love the beautiful, pretty, colorful art of the manga and original anime, and the anime's fluid animation. Crystal's first two seasons however, had poorly drawn, sketchy, mostly monochrome art with stiff, choppy animation, and the characters didn't look anything like Naoko's artwork. Characters would be off model, disproportionate, eyes would be misaligned and the Blu-Rays didn't even fix the problems and made them worse, even leaving in a mistake where they played the wrong attack footage in Act 17. The transformations were terrible CGI with noodle armed and legged models, sub-par special effects, and they were even too lazy to make new ones. Hilarious faces that were in the manga are erased and as a result most of the comedy is unfunny and practically absent. The pacing of the story/adaptation of the manga was terrible. It stuck too close to the manga as a shot by shot adaptation. Remakes like Psycho from 1998 have shown that shot by shot unfortunately is not a good idea, and it can apply here. Being too close to the manga as a shot by shot episode more hurts the series rather than benefiting it and even brings up flaws that never were discovered before, like for example, in season 2, why even give the Inner Senshi Star Power wands if Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter, three of them, are going to be captured for most of the arc? The lack of so-called "filler" episodes, which didn't even feel like filler at all in the original anime sans SuperS, made the story too quick and didn't give us time to explore the characters. The action scenes were terrible also as the Sailors here were powerless most of the time, besides also being poorly animated.Horrendous characterization. Everyone but Usagi/Sailor Moon, who was a Mary Sue who's unhealthily obsessed with Mamoru (and maybe Sailor Pluto), has no personality whatsoever, and some of them, particularly Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter could be taken out of the series and nothing would change. Most of the villains are also just there for the sake of being evil and such, no real reason behind their motives. Overall, seasons 1-2 failed miserably not only as a Sailor Moon anime, but as an anime series in general, it literally went the lowest an anime can go.Season 3 improves most of the problems with a better story, better animation that is more fluid (and has funny faces and better 2D transformations), is more faithful to the manga, and adds a bit more of personality to the characters, even the Inners, but unfortunately it doesn't do a good job of characterizing the famous Sailors Uranus and Neptune (Neptune is bland with no personality and Uranus, all I'm gonna say is, the less said about that assaulting kiss and that subplot, the better), it still maintains the flaws of being a shot by shot adaptation, pushing the Inners to the sidelines unlike in Sailor Moon S, mostly bland villains (I miss 90's Professor Tomoe, Eudial and Mimette) and the final battle falls really flat especially compared to its manga counterpart and the original anime version. It's still worth a watch though, it's not amazing compared to Sailor Moon S, but it's a decent enjoyable series and retains some of the magic of Sailor Moon. However though, despite season 3 being superior, I can't recommend Sailor Moon Crystal as a whole and only season 3. To me, two horrible anime seasons followed by a third decent one do not deserve an 8.1 on this site. Instead, it deserves a 5. Fingers crossed that season 4, based on the best manga arc, Dream, will be even better.
sara2520 Sailor Moon is back in Sailor Moon Crystal, a retelling of Sailor Moon, based on the manga. As a long life fan of Sailor Moon since the age of five, I admire the genius that is Naoka Takeuchi, who is the creator of Sailor Moon. She makes every version of her creation memorable with the catchy music, the powerful story lines, the beautiful artwork, the humor, and the lifelong friendships, the messages of female empowerment and acceptance of our differences, the epic battles, and the larger-than-life love story that crosses over time.Whether it was the anime, the live action version, the movies, and now the manga version, all of them had scenes that stood out. Remember in the anime in the second episode of Season Two when Usagi/Serena and Mamoru/Darien broke up and left us crying, "Why, you were only together in one episode!" We were distraught when the show was cancelled halfway through the season leaving us wondering if they ever got back together. We were not relieved until Toonami started airing the new episodes, the so-called Lost Episodes, after school and we finally saw them getting back together. Remember the scene in the live action version when Sailor Moon finds out that Mamoru is really Tuxedo Kamen/Tuxedo Mask and the music playing in the background. How about the scene in Sailor Moon R the Movie: The Promise of the Rose, when Sailor Moon uses the silver crystal to transform into Princess Serenity to battle Fiore, Mamoru's childhood friend, with Moon Revenge playing perfectly timed in the battleground then dies when the crystal shatters and is revitalized by Mamoru's kiss. Everyone has a favorite Sailor Moon memory. Some loved the dubbed version, while some favored the Japanese version. Some wished certain music played in the other version during epic scenes and battles. It doesn't matter because every version of Sailor Moon is great and filled with heart and long lasting friendships between girls that we hardly see in the world today with all the negative depictions of female rivalry on television. One of my favorite Sailor Moon moments was watching in the live action version of the teenage friends having fun having sleepovers and singing karaoke together. The pilot for SMC was better than most live action television shows on the air today. It's like watching the anime version but the same time it's completely different and refreshing with brand new music, a catchy intro and ending music, and beautiful artwork. It's like watching the beginning of a captivating love story between two star crossed lovers, strong friendships, and the epic battle between good and evil. I loved the attention to detail like Usagi getting ready for school, Mamoru wearing a tuxedo in board daylight, his reflection in the mirror at the jewelry store, the way Mamoru and Usagi look at one another when they first see each other and you can see them falling in love right before your eyes, and the way Usagi goes back to get her schoolbag after meeting Mamoru for the first time. Also, the clothes have been upgraded from the nineties. If you are a fan, you will enjoy it because it brings back childhood nostalgia. To the new generation of fans, your breath will be taken away.
