StreamingEagle I really enjoyed the one season of this show. Complex, entertaining characters form the foundation for a unique show. It is a shame that they only had one season because it is better than most things on TV.
timcurryis god "River" is a police/ crime drama that stands out from so many others. It's very human. It tells a story that most people can relate to in one way or another. The development of the two main characters, "River," and his partner, "Stevie," is enjoyable to watch. The more we get to know who Stevie was, the more we know who River is. Much of what I liked about this series is sensory; beyond just the story line; rainy London streets and city lights, the soundtrack...and as we are seeing things from the point of view (mostly) of River, we see Stevie through his eyes, too. She is beloved. This is one of those rare series where once you've finished the last episode, you'll want to go right back to the first one again. And that's saying something; because there's only one season. Heartbreaking, warm, suspenseful. Just beautiful. Although Stellan Skarsgard very adeptly and tenderly plays the role of "River," I have to admit now I want to go back and watch everything Nicola Walker (who plays "Stevie") ever did.
jimparrett This series took me three episodes before it sunk in. The first two episodes teetered between M. Night Shyamalan ridiculousness and Terrence Malick pompous creepiness. Episode three cuts back on the silly voice overs and laughable conversations with dead people, giving this series some serious mojo. Combine that with some top notch writing, stellar acting from Skarsgård and crisp direction and you have an intriguing and engrossing show. But best of all, Manville's strong but vulnerable boss illuminates the series with some revelatory chops that make everything seem more real and more involving with every show. By the conclusion, I was hooked and wanting more. Television shows don't get much more substantive than this.
J. (CountJonnie) River is part regular entertaining police story. The biggest plus goes to the incredible acting. Every actor blows me away, in every scene. Unfortunately, the main character is a disturbed man who suffers from hallucinations that bother him, but also the viewer, to the point where all credibility is lost and a lot of the sympathy will be gone. That is not the actor's fault, because he plays this character flawlessly. However, his illness and his hallucinations add so much to the character, but nothing to the story and what surprises the most, is how this man can keep doing his work (which he does great somehow). This series is one of many that falls into its own trap, by trying to be unique and special, while without that, it would have been not special, but just simply very, very good.If you watch it for a compelling story, it will be mediocre. If you watch it for the character, their development and relations, be amazed.
