zee ...but you have to be in the audience to agree. For those of us in the intended audience, the iconoclasts or nerds or quirky people who love this show, it's the best comedy that TV has ever done. It probably helps to understand the humor if you're from the heartland of the US and about the same age as the writing staff, but those aren't necessary qualifications for finding this funny. MST3K takes the bad sf, giant-bug, and made-for-TV movies I will watch anyway on a rainy afternoon and makes jokes at their expense. Bad sound, bad lighting, bad dialog, bad acting, bad costumes, bad music: none of these are safe from the MST writers. Sometimes I feel guilty for laughing at their insult humor, but I can't deny they do it well. They excel at making interesting connections between what they are watching and pop culture, as when the potato- eating gal dies in Deathstalker, and they quip "She was all-righta" (a joke on an old advertising slogan), or when in Gorgo, they came up with a clever rewriting of lyrics from Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."The two actors who voiced Crow, Trace and Bill, are my favorites of the performers, but I like the whole bunch. The sketches are hit and miss, but if they sing, that one is almost guaranteed to be a winner. If you don't get it, I'm not angry at you. Many people don't connect with it. Some of the people who made the bad movies they poke fun at are resentful. (But dudes, your movies weren't great. I'm sorry, but they just weren't. Deal with it.) But for me, watching and rewatching every episode five or six times has provided me with countless hours of healthy laughter.
Erich Bennett I do not see why people are claiming that this show is great. When I was told about this show, I thought it would be the funniest show ever, because the idea of it is so appealing to me and I love shows where they make fun of things, like the soup, and tosh.o and other stuff like that. But honestly its not funny. One thing that this show flaws in is that its rated PG. Most shows where they fun of something is usually rated PG-13 or TV-14. It's really hard to make a successful show where they fun of something and its rated PG. Second of all, the movies they chose were just not the right type of movies to make fun of. They should have did movies that were more recent like movies from the 80's or 90's. I mean they should of done movies that came out immediately on VHS. But it might just be me and not my kind of comedy. I mean its late 80's and throughout 90's comedy that even though its only 10-20 years away from 2010, comedy back then could have changed.Third and probably the biggest flaw is that the comments themselves. They commented every five seconds, and a lot of them didn't make sense and it wasn't even that funny. And also I'm not sure why but I think it would have been funnier if they were facing you (away from the screen) instead of towards the screen and you see their backs/shadows. What they also should of done is not show them at all when the movie played and every minute or so and not every ten seconds, they pop up and comment. Also they could of done is when they're going to comment is pause the movie and make that noise when you stop and put your hand on a record player and comment. I love this idea. I think they should make a modernized version of this because there are so many screw up movies and bad movies today such as almost every movie on the syfy channel. And if they were to do that, I really, really think they should make it PG-13 or TV-14. And use the concept and techniques they use on the soup because I think it would be a great hit.
hnt_dnl MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 (MST3K for short) is maybe the single most original idea ever in the history of TV! While other formats that make fun of pop culture got stale after a while (SNL being the biggest example!), MST3K was never boring. The basic concept is that a human and 2 robots would make fun of, or riff, cheesy drive-in movies, mostly of the "sci-fi" genre. Over it's 11-year run, MST3K managed to riff an eclectic mix of crappy movies from the 50s to the 80s (and a couple of 90s turds managed to sneak in there!). Also, in between riffing the movies, they did "host segment" bits that mimicked or mocked parts of the movie. The original "human" was the MST3K creator Joel Hodgson, and his 2 bots Tom Servo (voiced for virtually the entire run by show writer and actor Kevin Murphy) and Crow T. Robot (originally voiced by Trace Beaulieu). Trace Beaulieu also played Dr. Clayton Forrester, Joel's tormentor that made him and the bots watch crappy movies. TV's Frank was Forrester's sidekick and they were a hoot. After a few years, Joel left and show writer and actor Mike Nelson was promoted to being the human host, along with Tom and Crow (voiced now by Bill Corbett). In later years, Mike's new tormentor was Pearl (played by Mary Jo Pehl). Pearl's sidekicks were Bobo (Murphy) and Brain Guy (Corbett). While the Joel/Forrester years are definitely enjoyable, I feel they upped the ante big time during the Mike/Pearl years! While Joel and Forrester had a relationship comprised of civility and witty banter, Mike and Pearl had a kind of childish yin-yang thing where they traded jabs and insults nonstop. Both pairs worked and it's nice to have that duality as you can go back and watch either one, depending on which you're in the mood for.The Joel/Forrester years were fun and the jokes were much more sublime and witty and you really have to have patience to get into some of those eps. My favorite Joel episode is far and away POD PEOPLE, which I think may actually be the best of the series. Every jab and pun that Joel and the bots threw at that movie worked! But the Mike/Pearl years are much more "in your face", insulting humor and the pop culture references are so general, you'll get the jokes right away, so you'll be laughing constantly. I like more of the Mike eps, like SOULTAKER (my favorite!), OVERDRAWN AT THE MEMORY BANK (starring Raul Julia!), THE SCREAMING SKULL, SPACE MUTINY, and TOUCH OF Satan! So many to choose from! Another huge bonus for some of the movies is watching the guys and bots riff those crappy 50s shorts that precede the movies. Sometimes, that is even more fun than the movies! I just wish the show had gone for at least another 4 or 5 years b/c there's still so many crappy movies that have yet to be riffed!
