Reviews

shannen-l-c After reading through endless reviews that all say the same thing, "The first two seasons are a 10/10 but after that it's not worth watching", I felt obliged to write a review to oppose this opinion. 'Misfits' is an incredibly unique show in every way. Whilst the premise of a bunch of kids having supernatural powers is something that's been done a million times over, 'Misfits' takes an overdone idea and makes it completely fresh. The setting, music, characters, plotlines, powers, everything is unique and characteristically 'Misfits'.The main cast being made up of young people on probation is great because how often do we view a story through the eyes of characters that are 'bad guys' turned 'heroes'? It's ironic and it works. It also gives the writers room to play around with morally grey characters that are at times nothing if not repugnant. Yet they're also relatable and at times likeable, and the cast themselves are all incredibly talented. As every other reviewer will point out, the cast does change a lot rather quickly and this is where a lot of the shows criticisms comes from. Personally, I think to rate the show significantly lower based on the changes to casting alone is incredibly small-minded and proof that those viewers felt 'Misfits' was solely built around Robert Sheehan's character, Nathan, which of course, it wasn't. There's no denying that Nathan was a big character who brought a lot of personality and humour to the show, but his departure enabled the audience to see more of the characters that had been cast into the shadows by Nathan and the introduction of new characters kept the stories fresh. If the original cast had have stuck around for the entire 5 seasons it would've become incredibly dull and repetitive. Their stories ran their course and they all left at a time when it felt right for them to move on. The humour is dark and witty, and the show is definitely not for those that take life seriously. The running gag with the probation workers is an example of how dark the shows humour is, but its effectively funny, in my opinion. Amongst the humour, there are very serious storylines and developments that showcase the casts talents beyond general comedic acting and play with the audience's emotions. Right until the very last season it's fun to try and guess what wacky new power the characters will come up against next (because trust me, there is a power for EVERYTHING). The writers also prove themselves to be rather clever writers in the development of Simon's storyline in particular (which I won't spoil for anyone, because it's by far one of the most well thought out plots across the 5 seasons). All in all, 'Misfits' is an entirely unique experience which delivers in a lot of areas. The later seasons being worse than the early seasons is a common misconception bred by people's inability to open up their minds and welcome the new characters. Each season has it's good and bad parts, just like any other show and it has to be taken by merit. Regardless of it's ups and downs overall it's a great show that I've rewatched countless times to relive the enjoyment.
The Original Spice Girl I can't really find any flaws in this. It's funny, violent, the effects are surprisingly good, and even when some of the cast are replaced (usually a show-killer) it remains brilliant! So if you, like me, are sick of Marvel, but still want to watch superheroes (or super anti-heroes in this case), this is what you want to watch!
cagesliquidators I fell in love with this show after the first 15 minutes. Amazing story and characters. I'm sure you will here this repeated hundreds of times in reviews made after the second season. Robert Sheehan carried this show on his back. Every season after gets progressively more boring. by the time I got to season 5 i found myself fast-forwarding during a lot of meaningless dialogue.
original_fuzzball First things first: Watch the first two seasons of this amazingly quirky obnoxious show! I quickly fell in love with the Misfits and could not wait to watch each episode! So why did I give this show a 7? Because you can't rate individual seasons.Seasons 1 & 2 are absolutely amazing! If this show had ended after season 2 I would rate it (overall) right up there with Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones as some of the best TV to come out in a long time. However it did not end, it went on for several more seasons and some of the magic was lost IMO.SPOILER ALERT (minor/semi-big spoiler coming but no names)When we lose one of the original cast at the end of season 2 (note: I'm not saying death or not death, nor *who* is gone just that someone is gone), season 3 loses just a little bit of the magic that the show had in seasons 1 & 2. That said there was still solid chemistry amongst the Misfits, and some great writing for season 3. If the show had ended at the end of season 3, I could have still rated it a very solid 9. Maybe 9.5.SPOILER ALERT (the next spoilers are BIG, still no names)Season 4 kind of falls apart. We lose more of the original cast and It feels like the writers are trying to replace those that have gone with almost the same archetypes and it just doesn't work. The cast of season 4 does not have the chemistry that existed in the first 3 seasons. Further, the one remaining original cast member turns very 1-dimensional,(here comes the big SPOILER I warned about - still no names)so much that when this character dies, I wasn't really that sad. Had this character died in any of the first 3 seasons I would have been screaming at my television begging that it didn't happen. However that was not the case. It was a bit sad, but more sad was that the character had really been turned into more of prop or anchor to try to hold together the new cast. It was a real shame, because I really liked this character, especially the character's growth during season 3.I'm writing this review without having seen the 5th (final) season. I don't know if I will watch it. I've basically forced myself through the 4th season. Had the 4th season been the first season of this show, it would have been cancelled and no one would be writing about it IMHO. Really it's nothing special. I might watch season 5 kind of like the same reason you slow down to gawk at an accident on the road, but I have very very low expectations at this point. That said, don't let my sourness on the later seasons stop you. Watch the first 3 seasons. There is a solid story and you will feel like you saw something worthwhile. After that, you can decide if you want to dip your toe into seasons 4 & 5. Who knows, maybe the cast changes will work for you, then again maybe not.UPDATE: I decided to watch season 5 after all, I just *needed* to see how this show would end. While I still feel Season 4 is a train wreck and the cast does not have the chemistry that existed in the first 3 seasons, I do have to say that season 5 got better. I'll still stick to my overall rating, but I have to admit I was totally busting a gut during the Season 5 final episode!
