7 1/2 star should mean this is a pretty darn good series. It was not for me. There were crimes within crimes with no "wow" at the end. The lead actress was so annoying. Stomping around in that huge jacket with those skinny legs drove me crazy. The few times she was out of the jacket, her tops were loose and flowy. Were the producers hiding a pregnancy, beer belly... WHAT? Between her duck lips, stomping boots and swilling beer, it was a challenge for me to focus on the story and lackluster plot. Aside from Anna Friel, the remaining actors did a great job with what they had to work with. Friel just didn't cut it for me at all. I'll skip Season 2.

Mystery, suspense, action, and...Marcella. They better not cancel it!

The plot is complex but not beyond following. The cast is pretty good. Marcella's family situation and blackouts may be the point of unnecessary confusion but they do build up interest as she gets closer to revealing her personal truth. Editing and camerawork is tight and effective.

The acting was great but the main character was totally unbelievable. The writers ask us to believe she is a first rate detective by picking up on things that no one else can see but then they ask us to believe that this first rate, intelligent, tough detective makes amateurish mistakes. I ain't buying that. Won't watch any more, unless Netflix announces they have completely replaced the writing staff. Its a pity because the actors were almost uniformly great but the writers ruined the show for them and me. Anyway, I'm getting tired of English mysteries because it seems that the writers are trying to outdo each other with plot twists.
