grantss Thomas Magnum, a former Naval Intelligence officer, is a private investigator. He live in Hawaii, on the estate of multi-millionaire author Robin Masters. Masters is never around, so the estate is run by Higgins, a stuffy Englishman, and former Army Sergeant Major. Higgins has a dim view of Magnum, a view he projects through ensuring that the guard dobermans, Zeus and Apollo, make life difficult for Magnum. Meanwhile Magnum is out solving cases in Masters' Ferrari, cases often involving murder and intrigue. In these endeavors he is aided by his closest friends, TC, a chopper pilot, and Rick.Wonderfully entertaining. Every episode is a thrill-a-minute, a roller-coaster ride of intrigue and action, with some decent humour thrown in for good measure.Add in the sheer coolness and holiday-feel of the Hawaiian setting and Magnum's Ferrari and you have the makings of a great series.
BoomerDT "Magnum PI" was of course a vehicle for Tom Selleck. He was Magnum, no doubt a great looking guy who the chicks dug, but also the type of leading man the guys liked. He had a sense of humor, was loyal to his friends and had his ethics and responsibility. But John Hillerman as Higgins, the ex-Sgt. Major who was the Major Domo of Robins Nest and may or may not have been Robin Masters, was astounding in his portrayal. Higgins could be a pretentious know it all, but then he usually knew something about most everything. And behind the stiff English stoicism breathed a generous and caring human. He had seen it all in his career in the British military and intelligence and although he was retired he relished the chance for action afforded by his association with Magnum. Hillerman just nailed the part and nothing was better than the scenes between him and Selleck. Higgins could often get quite irritated with Magnum, but there was always a grudging respect and admiration for each other. I wouldn't call it a father-son relationship, nor was Magnum and Higgins buddies the way he was with Rick and TC, but a sense of camaraderie that 2 professional commandos have for each other. The whole Robin Masters and Robin's Nest was a brilliant bit by the creators of Magnum. There was some preposterous stuff like having a PI driving a red Ferrari, a cool car but just a bit hard to keep any semblance of anonymity in such a ride. Good cast, I've mentioned Hillerman. Nothing special about Manetti or Mosley as Rick and TC, although they did have some good comic moments. Enjoyed Agatha, Tanaka, Mac, the luscious Lt Maggie Poole {never figured why Magnum didn't hit on her} A lot of comedy in this show, plus some very moving moments. Without a doubt, one of the best shows of its genre.
SanteeFats For a 1980's show this is a real good one. Tom Selleck is Magnum, he is a private investigator who gets to live on the estate of a writer with way too much money. John Hillerman (Higgins) is great as the majordomo/manager of the Hawaii estate. He is a retired British sergeant major. Magnum and Higgins are at odds a lot of the time. It is usually pretty funny. There are two doberman's named Apollo and Zeus that appear to be under total control by Higgins. The dogs are kind of a foil in regards to Magnum. At times Higgins calls them off and at other times they are used to intimidate or coerce Magnum to do something Higgins wants. The episodes run from just funny to very serious. Magnum usually doesn't kill anyone but does at rare times. Roger Mosley is the Nam era chopper pilot now with his own chopper conducting tours of the islands, IF he is not suborned by Magnum. Rick is another Nam vet who helps from time to time, he usually runs the bar at an exclusive club but pitches in when needed. The scripts are fairly good, the acting is average, the casting though is pretty good and the women are of course very nice. I like this series because it is just nice entertainment.
