Synopsis

Kath & Kim is a character-driven Australian television situation comedy series. The series was created by, and is written by Jane Turner and Gina Riley who play the title characters: a suburban mother and daughter with a dysfunctional relationship. The series main characters consist of Kath Day-Knight, a cheerful 50-year-old woman, her self-indulgent daughter Kim Craig, Kath's boyfriend and second husband, the metrosexual Kel Knight, as well as Kim's estranged husband Brett Craig and her lonely, overweight "second best friend" Sharon Strzelecki. The series is set in the fictional suburb of Fountain Lakes in Melbourne. It is primarily filmed in Patterson Lakes. The series was conceived by Turner and Riley in the early 1990s as a weekly segment of the Australian comedy series Fast Forward. The skit was then developed into a full-series. The first series of Kath & Kim premiered on ABC TV on 16 May 2002, with three further series following, while a television movie, entitled Da Kath and Kim Code, was broadcast nationally on 25 November 2005. Kath & Kim has garnered much critical acclaim since its debut, winning two Logie Awards, for "Outstanding Comedy Programme" and the "Best Television Drama Series" award at the Australian Film Institute Awards. In Australia, it has become a pop culture phenomenon, and is a success with audiences nationwide. Internationally, the series has spawned a cult fanbase, and in 2006 it was announced an American version of the series would be produced, to air on NBC. Riley and Turner served as executive producers on the US version. The American version was also picked up by Seven, which debuted the program on 12 October 2008, just three days after its debut in the United States.

Reviews

mccrohan We can safely laugh at the antics of Kath and Kim and the other characters in this TV series. Kath and Kim live in expensive houses and drive nice cars and often purchase life,s little luxuries. We do not see poverty nor the misery of poor Australian people struggling with debt. Enjoy seeing life in prosperous middle-class Australia. We can have many laughs and ignore the massive problems afflicting Australian society. Australia has an alarming increase in drug use and addiction (includes alcohol)and Australians rate very highly in gambling expenditure (meaning family financial resources are greatly reduced). However enjoy the many laughs in this very successful TV series and enjoy the fine comic performances by these talented actors
Syl I love Kath and Kim. I only saw a few episodes of this show on a British Airways flight in 2003 and I hope and pray that it will come out on DVD or be shown in the New York City area. I think Britcom fans would get a kick out of this show. I know I did. I think the writing and acting both out of this world or just down under. I still think about the show and look for it on the internet. So please public stations, use those dollars to purchase the rights to bring this show to American audiences. I think they will get a kick out of it like I did. I think it's one of the best Australian shows around. The actresses who play Kath and Kim really remind me Absolutely Fabulous with a bit more sense to their rhythm. Kath and Kim are a mother and daughter. The daughter prefers to sleep (not around) and has no motivation while the mother has enough for her and everybody else around the house.
Kaldeko This may have some spoilers as to characters and some events. What can you say about Kath and Kim? It is hilarious. The very best comedy I have ever seen and that's saying something. The characters are larger than life and their own oblivious delivery of hilarious lines makes it even better. Kim, so sulky and self-assured, plays the ultimate haggy suburban wife while Kath, the other female lead, just leaves me shaking with laughter. She lives in such a normal world and at the outset, she is a normal suburbanite, but as Silverstone's character said in Clueless, "It's so Monet. From far away it's great but up close it's a total mess". I love the bungled proverbs, I love the running jokes, I love the freakish, cringe-worthiness of the mature-age, highly sexual relationship and I love the obese, hypochondriac "second-best-friend" Sharon. And I have every episode on tape which is a little sad.An article in TV Scene featured an interview with Jane Turner where she reported that a second series is a very definite possibility. Fingers crossed.
Samual Tompson As an international journilist I am increasingly interested with television shows that represent Australian society. I have always wondered to what extent your typical stereotype, bloke and sheila really exist in our everyday life. Previously i had never come across a show quite like Kath and Kim. And although i am not proud to admit it, it has become evident to me that the Kath and Kim stereotype is a very realistic representation of the majority of Australians! What makes Kath and Kim so funny is in fact the irony in the show. Who can honestly say that they don't know a neigbour, auntie or a friend who don't share some of kath and kim characteristics. The situation they are in is very common for typical aussies, living in the suburbs. How many of us are obsessed about being trim, are in disfunctional relationships are chain smokers. Even the bad fashion sense, cheap slang and horribly unromatic attempts to win our lovers reflect on our unique society and are exclusivley Australian ( even if we don't like to admit it!) Kath and Kim is a reality check for us australians showing us how we really are. It is my impression Kath and Kim best represents the reality of australian life, whether we like it or not.
