I'm sorry, but if shows like Scrubs and Newsradio can get over 8 ratings, this deserves 10/10! Revolving around various people working in a fashion magazine (the boss, fashion editor, photographer etc) it basically follows their lives with hilarious results! The cast is absolutely superb and the comedy is delivered with class and with perfect timing. There is no overacting like in Scrubs and all this combines to make one of the greatest comedy shows ever! Each character brings his own unique humor to the show and the chemistry created has hardly been marched since (perhaps Will and Grace & My Family come close). Jack, Nina, Finch, Maya and Elliot have only one problem...they left our screens to soon!

Before Ugly Betty came onto the scene and arrived on our TV screens, shows such as Veronica's Closet, Suddenly Susan and Just Shoot Me highlighted the role of the fashion magazine industry during the 90s era. Out of the three, the latter sitcom became the most successful- although for an NBC produced show it was predominately overlooked in favour of the successful big wigs, Friends, Frasier and Will and Grace. Lasting 4 years it starred George Segal as Jack Gallo, boss of magazine Blush and Laura San Giocomo as his daughter Mya, of whom Jack hires after she was initially fired from her previous job. Mya tries to fit in and eventually falls out and forms alliances with Nina Van Horn an ex- model, Dennis Finch and photographer, Elliot.I have to say that when I first saw a couple of the earlier episodes, I thought that this is not going to be good, but later on as the series progressed, the jokes were funnier and the situations were somewhat outlandish but also hilarious.Wendy Malick is just brilliant as Nina- feisty, sassy but also hilarious and her love/hate relationship with Finch, played by former comic David Spade is one of the strengths of the show. She has terrific comic timing and her delivery is almost perfect, she makes it look simple (she also did really well when she appeared during the final season of Frasier as Martin Crane's girlfriend). Wendy is one of those actresses of whom deserves a show of her own. Spade is also good as the sarcastic and often mischievous, Finch. At times, his one-liners can bring the smile to the audiences's faces. Elliot is less shallow and self-centred compared to Nina and Finch and whilst some had raised eyebrows when he and Mya became a couple, he eventually becomes more down-to-earth and subtle. George Segal is also good as Jack as he successfully manages to juggle both on screen roles as boss of a successful firm and a father. It is not an absolute classic by any means, but Just Shoot Me is a fun little sitcom held together by the ensemble cast of Malick, Spade and Enrico. The humour is very much sarcasm laced with shots of insults, put downs and crazy outbursts- and yet that is no bad thing for this show, because it is done in a way that is intelligent but witty at the same time too.If you like your sitcoms but prefer something completely different to Friends, Frasier, Will and Grace to name, then give Just Shoot me a try.

From 1997 to 2003, this brilliant comedy was one of the most highly rated sitcoms on TV. It starred George Segal as the brains behind a woman's fashion and tips magazine called Blush. The creative work team- his daughter writer Maya Gallo (Laura San Giocomo), photographer Elliot DiMauro (Enrico Colantoni) fashion expert and ex-super model Nina Van Horne (Wendy Malick) and secretary Dennis Finch (David Spade). The show was mostly popular because of David Spade who enjoyed the biggest success outside the show in various comedy movies and a stint on Saturday Night Live, in skits where he was usually paired with the now late comedian Chris Farley. The show never had a dull moment. The colorful cast carried most of the show, as the relationships were connected in one way or another. Wealthy billionaire Jack Gallo gave a top writing job to his daughter, the brainy Columbia graduate Maya (this was the pilot episode)..eventually we meet the rest of the characters and we even delve into their personalities and backgrounds. Jack found Elliot working as a street photographer and hired him on the spot, Nina had a very exciting and crazy past, coming from poverty in a farm to big supermodel in the 70's to washed-up super model who despite her age is still "hot" and adventurous, never giving up her pleasure-seeking lifestyle. Shes quite hilarious as a lovable diva. Dennis Finch was once a figure skater but Jack saw potential in him not only as a secretary for Blush, but as a sort of son figure. The electric chemistry between Maya and Elliot was also very cool to watch on TV. They were almost like Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn- so charismatic, so strong, so smart, nearly always at each other's throat but always with a sexual tension in there somewhere. Jack Gallo, who was a sort of Donald Trump parody, had married and divorced several times but is at heart a good father, despite his tough, no-nonsense exterior. My favorite episodes- The Finch that Stole Christmas: Dennis gets his co-workers bad presents as vengeance, Nina's retrospective life story told by a narrator and the rest of the cast, David Hasselhoff as an actor appearing in one of Dennis' low budget films "The Burning House" a cheesy drama, Jack and Maya accidentally kill Denni's cat, Maya's endless unsuitable dates among them a guy who likes to take off his shirt, a guy who compared to her is very dumb (played by Joe Rogan who would later host Fear Factor)..Elliot taking high class hooker to a party and pretending she's a doctor (played by Lucy Lawless better known as Xena), Maya hosts a "Clue" type party in period costume, Nina dating a man who is too attached to his mom, Kathy Lee Gifford as a bitchy romance writer who takes Dennis as a boy toy...so many episodes to count. It was a very funny and well-written comic sitcom. I really wish Blush was a real life magazine. LOL

In Australia, we seem to get a large amount of sitcoms imported from Britain and the US of A. Almost without exception (in my opinion, anyway), most of the stuff from the US does not stack up against most of the stuff from Britain...Except for "Just Shoot Me".I was chatting with a colleague at work about why sitcoms such as this one and "Becker" (well, the earlier seasons at least) appeal to my particular funny bone. We both came to the conclusion that it's the comedy of insults.Nina is always insulting Finch who is insulting Nina back and while Eliot is treating his photographic models badly Maya is either sitting in the corner bemoaning the fact that she's daddy's girl or goading Eliot on to insult Nina all the more. And all the time this is going on, Jack is either trying to run the office or being run himself by Finch. It's sad to hear that this show has been canned - it will be missed.
