scientiiaa Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? is a Japanese light novel series written by Fujino Oumori and illustrated by Suzuhito Yasuda. SB Creative has published eleven volumes since January 2013 under their GA Bunko imprint. It has received two manga adaptations, as well as an anime television adaptation by J.C.Staff, which aired from April 4 to June 27, 2015. An OVA was released on December 7, 2016. A second anime season and an original anime film adaptation were both announced in February 2018. After growing bored of their realms, the gods of multiple pantheons descended to Earth, where they create groups called Famillia (just like a guild). The story takes place in a fictional city called Orario, which also has a tremendous net of catacombs (a dungeon). Many members of Famillias visit this dungeon to defeat monsters to earn money and to just become famous. Among many Famillias, there is the Goddess Hestia's Familia. Unlike other Gods, Hestia has only one follower, who has never had a desire to reach "the top." However, everything changes when the only follower of Hestia, Bell, meet Ais Wallenstein, a first class adventurer. Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? focuses on Bell's quest to becoming one of the strongest adventurers. Despite what appears to be a fairly basic Dungeons setup for the story, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? does manage to offer some good originality. There are Gods of many mythologies and quite enough other aspects that you will discover. Anyways, to my big surprise, the story does it job well. You are being introduced to a fantasy world, where there are no overpowered adventurers, their abilities are nothing but 90% of hard work and 10% of the help they get from the leaders of their Famillias, Gods. As a result, the show's story is solidly good. Indeed, there are some minor flaws and there is nothing groundbreaking about it, but it is still quite interesting to follow. The character designs, as well as the animation are quite cute. There are many character designs, a great variety of beautiful backgrounds, and some flashy action scenes. The sound part for this anime is rather controversial. The OP and ED are somewhat average. Yet, the anime offers you some awesome voice acting (even the English one is okay!) and also a pretty good OST, which perfectly fits the overall mood of the anime. There are two main heroes. The first, as mentioned before, is Bell Cranel, a young man in his teens with white hair and red eyes. He wears light armor and usually carries around a small blade. He is a kind, yet shy boy, who has great ambitions. Never annoying, Bells quest to fame will surely make you worry for his success. Hestia is the second and the last heroine of the show. She is a virgin Goddess of the hearth, architecture, and the right ordering of domesticity, the family, the home, and the state. Although, Bell is a weak adventurer, who hardly can kill a monster alone, he is a very hardworking individual, who never gives up. Hestia, too, has only one follower and, thus no money to make her Famillia popular among humans. Together, the two are trying to reach the top.Just like the story, the characters are also quite well-made, but not flawless. The good thing, which some might hate about such anime, is that there is no harem. Indeed, there is a hint that there might be a love triangle, it is destroyed a second after. All characters are just okay and there are no serious flaws that I would like to touch upon in my review. However, the only real flaw that makes Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? not that amazing, just like in many other shows, is supporting characters. No worries, nothing awful about them, I just think they could have been more interesting. As a result, if you are a fan of RPG-like anime, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? will surely be an interesting watch. If you have a bad luck with such anime, I would not recommend you to try your luck with this one. Yes, it is quite an interesting one, but nothing amazing that will make you change your mind. Worth checking out, 8/10.
ajrcvr "Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon" is a cute title, and that is pretty much what you can say about the entire series: it's cute.Sure, you have some semi-sexy, scantily clad, buxom female characters running around, but that is it in terms of anything sexy happening in the series, and all you get in the way of anything which resembles fan service. I only mention that because there is not a lot to this series, not even much in the way of ecchi presentation; it makes you wonder why they put such creatures in the story since there is nothing that occurs which has anything to do with sexy female characters,The story is of a place which is known as "the dungeon" and where you have "adventurers" tying to hook up with and work for "godesses"; it's only mildly interesting. To give the story action and drama, the adventurers must prove themselves by destroying the occasional monsters which come and go, gaining crystals which they use to get money and hopefully impress the females. The action scenes for this are okay, as is the animation and graphics, but certainly nothing overwhelming. Once again, it's kind of cute and basically remains that way throughout; not a lot of humor or action or sexuality or drama, or story for that matter. You can watch it for very light entertainment, paying little attention, and that's the best you can do with this series, because there is not a lot of anything powerful in it.
Tweekums In the world of Orario adventurers working for gods fight monsters in the 'dungeon'. Most adventurers work in large groups called 'familias' which serve a single deity but our protagonist, Bell Cranel, is in a familia of one serving the goddess Hestia. Bell is a junior adventurer who falls in love with Aiz Wallenstein, a senior adventurer who rescues him one day in the dungeon; shortly afterwards a new power is awakened and he rapidly improves in skill. Armed with a better weapon he takes on a supported (bag carrier) named Liliruca, unaware that she has another motive for working with him; a motive that will put him in danger. Over the course of the series he will have to win her over and defeat a number of dangerous monsters as well as avoid falling victim to rival adventurers who are suspicious of how quickly he is progressing. In many ways this is a fairly typical fantasy adventure anime; our protagonists starts off fairly weak but progresses to become the strongest while attracting a harem of female fans and different powered monsters living in different levels of the dungeon… almost like a video game. However despite these clichés I found it surprisingly enjoyable. Bell is a likable protagonist and even as he becomes more powerful he doesn't become annoyingly arrogant. The rest of the cast are good too; especially Hestia and Liliruca. Even though we don't doubt Bell will win his fights they are still exciting thanks to some pretty good animation. The character designs are distinctive so there is little danger of confusing anybody. Overall this is worth watching for people who like action anime in a fantasy setting; it is just a pity that it was only one season. These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.
joelherro In a mythical world where God's live among men, adventurers choose a God to follow and join their Familia. Then they explore this huge, multi-levelled dungeon and kill the monsters inside to gain crystals (in exchange for money) and to help build their skills. Bell Cranel is the sole member of the Goddess Hestia's Familia and he's an adventurer of modest skill. He does have a lot of courage, heart and potential though and learns fast. He meets a woman of immense beauty and strength and vows to become stronger so he could be considered worthy of a woman like her. There's a lot to like about this show. It has humour, action, a good plot, interesting characters and great animation. I only scored it a 7 because it's a bit 'young' for my taste (I'd have liked a darker, more serious tone) and at one season, it does seem a little pointless. I'd like to see a 2nd season to flesh things out more. Worth a watch.
