This show is full to overflowing with cliches. Do yourself a favor and watch Josey Whales again instead. The main actor is the only thing worth watching here - and the hats, even if they have nothing to do with the time period.

Hands down one of, if not THE best series on TV. AMC really showed an amazing point of American History while making it extremely entertaining and getting you to really invest in the characters. It shows the good and bad of the times and the growth of the greatest nation and all that came with regardless on how you feel about it in current times. Anson Mount is an amazing actor.

"Hell on Wheels" is the story of the building of the great Continental railroad, or more precisely the story of the Hero, Cullen Bohannon, and his exploits. There are several antagonists along the way, with Colm Meaney's Thomas "Doc" Durant the most prominent. This has a similar feel to the dynamic in "Deadwood", with the 2 main characters playing off one another to great effect. Bohannon wears a black hat and is a troubled soul. Joe and Tony Gayton take full advantage of the long form. Anson Mount's Cullen Bohannon matures in front of our eyes. He gets better with age. Hang in there if you are having trouble connecting to the characters at the beginning. This show gets better every season. It is, in the end, quite good, right up there with "Deadwood". A real western- you can almost smell the muddy animals and men.C

I have a fan theory that this is the OFFICIAL but secret prelude series to the greatest show of all time- 'Deadwood' and that when the train line reaches the town, the two shows will merge, they are both so similar in tone and quality, and both set in the almost exact historical time period.Smart, dark and gritty with moments intelligent humour, 'HOW' leaves me wanting more and wanting to live in this period despite the horror and deprivation.'Bohannon' is the sort of character, that empires are built on, I hope this show ends when the tracks arrive at Deadwood, and begins as- 'Deadwood Season 4' with a combined cast of the two shows.
