tapio_hietamaki Despite being based on a Stephen King book, 'Haven' is not a horror show. It's a supernatural crime drama and it's not scary in the least and not meant to be.It's about a woman detective solving crime in a small town, each episode having a new crime which is somehow connected to the inexplicable 'Troubles' going around town. Sounds ominous but actually it's just the townspeople gaining some magic power and each time everything is neatly resolved. The show is nice to watch but very bland. It doesn't really pull off the thriller style, it's not suspenseful enough. There rarely seems to be any real sense of danger, and the characters are not interesting enough for the audience to care about the inconsequential small-town drama.
uitty To understand Haven, you really have to watch and after a couple of episodes (if you're a Sci-fi fan) one is pretty much hooked. I was and still am. The show can seem repetitive at times, and that's really its only flaw, if there is one. The characters are great, the story line draws you into each episode, and the show has heart. As you move along from season to season you can't help but wonder what will happen next to the characters in Haven. Most of the show is rated TV-14 for language and thematic elements. Its not necessarily meant for the younger crowd, however, it is tastefully written. All in all, its was great show. To truly understand it, you would have to watch it. Right now (not sure how long it'll be available) Netflix has all 5 seasons streaming. So watch while you can. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
rainy-designs Haven breathes new life into the fantasy genre with its unique blend of investigative/cop drama, mystery/suspense, and sometimes even a touch of horror. Being inspired by Stephen King novel, this TV show lives up to the expectations associated with that description. Each "problem of the week" is always new and unique, the show never falls into being predictable on that front. Lead actors are all average at the very least and some play into their roles excellently, most notably Emily Rose and Eric Balfour. The overall plot arc is not only amazingly unique it is also very engaging. The characters, their relationships, and their overall development are interesting and add to the story without overwhelming it. This show also does not lack for comic relief, banter between characters is quick witted and funny without trying too hard, the often sarcastic under tones to the dialogue in the show seems to come naturally to the cast. The filming in the show is nice, the scenes are beautiful (filmed in Nova Scotia) and there are almost always gorgeous panoramic shots of the unique coast line and brightly colored little town) in every episode. I knocked off a star for some poorly written dialogue (especially in seasons one and two) and some bad/cheesy acting from some of the minor characters (usually single episode characters and very minor background characters). If you enjoy mystery/suspense/thriller type TV shows like Lost, Orphan Black, X-Files, or Fringe or you like supernatural/fantasy TV shows like Hemlock Grove, Supernatural, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer you'll probably enjoy this. Some people who enjoy cop dramas might like this as well, though this definitely does lean toward the supernatural/fantasy end of things it does involve a lot of problem solving via examination of crime scene evidence etc.
Shopaholic35 Haven has always been the type of show that was pretty good but it never really reached its full potential. The first three seasons defined the show well but once the fourth started everything turned a little sour and it lost the spark it once had.As a general concept Haven is new and fresh with a nice mystery thriller tone and a supernatural edge. It centres around a town that experiences "troubles" which may seem a little lame or strange but at least initially it worked. Each episode was different and focused on a new trouble. The overarching storyline was also intriguing but unfortunately since they changed the central characters I have lost interest.Overall the show started good but has gone downhill. The new direction the show is taking just isn't working for me but I guess it's still alright. Haven will probably always be a good but mediocre show. Watchable but nothing special.
