EP4 A7 Corsair Jul 31, 2009

The F4U was arguably the finest propeller-driven fighter on the Allied side. It was the first single-engine American fighter to break 400 miles per hour in level flight. It was first driven by a Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp engine of 1800 horsepower, about as powerful as they could get at the time. Vought simply built the smallest airframe they could around the huge radial engine. To maximize performance, a 13-foot Hamilton Standard Propeller was used. It was originally designed to be operated from an aircraft carrier but the US Navy decided it was unsuitable for precise landings and take offs, so they handed it over to the Marines for land-based use. It proved highly successful both as a fighter and in the ground attack role. It continued in use as an attack airplane through the Korean war, and the last Corsair was produced in 1953.

EP5 A26 Invader Aug 07, 2009

The A-26 Invader was introduced in October, 1944, and was involved in every conflict that followed until finally retired in 1969. There was no other airplane quite like it. It was a twin-engine medium bomber or ground attack aircraft that excelled at both tasks. The famous B-17 heavy bomber could carry about 8,000 pounds of bombs and could make a top speed of about 270 miles per hour. The A-26 carried half that load at 350 miles per hour and, with emergency boosters, up to more than 370. The ground attack version carried eight .50 caliber machine guns in the nose. The top turret carried two more and could be aimed ahead to supplement the eight fixed guns. With cheek packs added, the total came to eighteen heavy machine guns.

Reviews

andrew muhling I watched one show (the Catalina) and that is enough. Why do documentary maker edit stuff like it's a music video and do cometary like it's a Hollywood drama? I'm not an idiot that needs to be kept awake by over the top, excited 16 year old boy, narration.. I sat down to watch this documentary because I was interested in the subject. There's no need to sell it to me like it's going to whiten my teeth the other side of sparkling.. I'm already on board, all you have to is tell the story. Then jerky, chop, cutaway, blur.. The editing of various scenes on that episode just about gave me tourettes. They also spelled the name of our national airline wrong. There is no "u" in Qantas..If all the episodes in this series are produced this way I'd avoid them..Fail fail fail..
Fox365 This series would be great - if it really showcased the Great Planes. And there are some great planes on the list, including some not featured on the repetitive "best of" or "top ten" shows. But the show is totally ruined by the camera work. It appears to have been shot by a ferret with ADD on caffeine who just bought his first movie camera and wants to try out all the features. Not only are the transitions incredibly frequent, they are accompanied by distracting 'swoosh' sound effects. The camera jerks around, never staying with a shot for long enough to make any impact. The program should tell a story, instead, it's a series of film snippets strung together in a haphazard fashion. It's almost unwatchable. It is about to the standard of the home movies of the 1950s in terms of the photographic techniques employed.Frequently, the wrong aircraft is shown, or the narrator talks about one aircraft when another is being shown on-screen. The narration is disjointed, and seems to have no overall flow. The bottom line is that this could and should have been a great series. But it should be renamed "Great Planes - Terrible Cinematography"
