Reviews

RavenGlamDVDCollector As a South African, I saw this on M-Net's Open Time, Fridays at 18:30, so the one thing I am up on you lot of Americans: I saw the whole thing, nyaah! nyaah! nyaah! Now that was years ago, so filling in the blanks here on IMDb is not going to be my strong suit, and I won't even try, even though I'm pretty sure of some facts. It's another one of those shows that I didn't really intend to watch, but I was monitoring (with my VCR on standby) the evening's menu, M-Net Premium Time began at 19:00. I made a point of watching when I saw that this one rose far, far above the level of junk spewed out in great gobs at us. Unfortunately, I didn't record a damn thing, because with a TV series, I insisted on having the whole thing, and this only became popular with me while it was on.So I read here the review mentioning how that person have 5 episodes and pulls out the tape every now and then, and I yell FOOL at myself for missed opportunities.People, appreciate what you have access to! Hold on to your favorites! I could do with this show right now on a cold winter's morning, a good rollicking laugh! Heed my words! As for the negative response for that stupid reason, there wasn't anything mean-spirited there. Screw political correctness anyway.Unavailable on DVD? Shops, you lose! Right now, I am in a mood to buy ten copies.
preppy-3 If you liked "Soap" you'll like this. It's about a crazy family with evil sister Denise Sandler (Teri Garr) and good sister Charlotte. It just involved Denise trying to get everything her way and will do anything to get it. Naturally they have some very unusual family members and friends. This aired for only a few months in 1991. In fact it was the first new show that was cancelled! I never figured out why. It was funny, racy (for 1991) and kept pushing the envelope every chance it got. Garr was just great in her role--she was clearly relishing every moment she was on screen. Also it had a blind character (played by Mark Blankfield) who accidentally destroys a laboratory completely while trying to help Charlotte. That came under attack by a group for blind people but it was repeated again a week or two later! I have to admit I was in hysterics both times I saw it. He also accidentally kisses another man on the lips--pretty risky for 1991.It was WAY ahead of its time and was probably too much for 1991 audiences. I think it would be a hit today. Where's the DVD release? I give this a 10.
hero Very funny show---great cast----unfortunately prematurely canceled when some unduly sensitive people were offended. If it ever shows itself, see rich performances by Teri Garr, Mark Blankfield and Seth Green! If this show had premiered today, it would have stood well against comedies such as ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. I believe Mark Blankfield's character's "visually challenged" antics would have met with contempt or "outrage"if viewed today. He simply, and comically, waves his blindness cane about with some hilarious consequences. In the same era, another extremely well cast comedy, "THE POWERS THAT BE", succumbed to studio neglect, placement of show with immense promise on a Saturday night schedule. If it is ever rerun, catch a suicidal, obsessive-compulsive congressman played by the great David Hyde Pierce.
ShaneEK Being a Teri Garr fan, I was excited to hear of a show starring her. When I saw the first episode, I was immediately hooked. The humor is wacky, hilarious, and executed perfectly by the whole cast. If you liked "Soap," you will like this show as well. I'm pretty sure it was produced by the same people. It's sad that shows of this caliber are not kept by the networks. I don't know if it has ever been shown on any of the cable or satellite channels, but if it ever is, be sure to catch it. I guarantee you will get several good laughs. Only six episodes were ever aired. I don't know if more were made or not. I was able to get 5 of the 6 when they originally were shown, and every few years I pull the tape out and watch it again. Great stuff!
