Honestly this show was amazing. Jonathan Rhys Meyers did a fantastic job of portraying Dracula and they seamlessly incorporated some of the features from the book into his character. The show was also very well written, with plenty of suspense, mystery and chemistry between the characters. The cinematography, costumes and set design was breathtaking as well. I watched when it aired and was recently thinking back on it when I was watching a different vampire flick. Obviously, I'm not alone in my fandom, as this is a 7+/10 on the review scale here. It's such a shame NBC ignored that and canceled it without even giving a second season or more closure to the story. I was so disappointed that I haven't watched any NBC shows ever since. So in conclusion, I highly recommend this series- but just to warn you, at the end of the one and only season, you'll be bummed there isn't more to come.

I do not care that it does not follow the original Dracula story. It has a great plot and it had me hooked from beginning to end. The acting gave me shivers and the decor was astonishing. The story has a lot of unexpected moves, and also some funny clichés. It is a whole new look on the tale, it still shows a lot of Dracula's mercilessness but also his compassionate side and his deep desires. You have no idea how the story will unfold and where it will take you. When I started watching the first season I did not realise there was no second season, this was quite a disappointment for me. I hope they will change their minds and continue this series, because it is outstanding. However, I wish that in the next season (if there ever comes one) they should really elaborated on the background story of Alexander.

I love this show! Jonathan Rhys Meyer is an outstanding actor and brings as much diversity to this character as he did to Henry VIII in The Tudors. Not only is this character intelligent and cunning, he's suave and sophisticated as well. For over 50 years I have enjoyed watching the less graphic Dracula movies and this program is the most refined and well written period piece I think I've ever seen. I like all the characters except for Mina - she bores me a bit. Unfortunately commercial TV is no longer able to keep a sophisticated show in its programming queue. Jonathan Rhys Meyer was quite brave to step from cable to commercial TV. If Dracula wants to continue its story line, then it needs to move to cable. Ever since the X-Files and other like programs have been canceled, not much more than junk is on commercial airwaves.

I watched the pilot for this series, and based on what I perceived to be a set of clear warning signs, dismissed it as clichéd, highly derivative, pandering trash. By chance I saw the second episode on Hulu, and then systematically watched the whole series. My revised opinion is that it's creative, intelligent, well-produced gaslamp fantasy/horror, and one or more people on the creative team are familiar with both the source material and previous "reimaginings" (good and bad), as well as with certain works of mainstream literature relating to the approximate period. All of the flaws I perceived in the pilot carried through the entire season, but they proved to be an irrelevant background, overwhelmed by the various plot threads of intrigue, subterfuge, romance, and calculated revenge, and offering no impediment to the development of the primary characters. If you read Dracula, The Count of Monte Cristo, and some of the more fantastic conspiracy theories about the Knights Templar, Freemasons, and Nicola Tesla, you could conceivably end up having a dream similar to this series. The program is likely to be canceled, but is currently available on Hulu. My advice, should you decide check out the show, is to watch at least the first two or three episodes. The pilot is actually fine if you know where the story is going, but it might discourage further viewing if taken by itself. At least that was my experience.
