Reviews

capncrunch9834 Well written. Very well cast. Well directed. Well acted.Cancelled?? One season??? What's wrong with people?!? Oh, I guess "Friends" was considered "entertaining"? Shallow people... shallow...This is one really good sci-fi series. I draw my conclusion on having watched only 3 episodes so far, and already I know I want to watch all the episodes I can. That is to say, all of the episodes I have been allowed to watch because of some half-wit corporate bean counters behind a desk that decided for me that it wasn't worth watching. Thank goodness these morons didn't get ahold of The X-Files! I haven't read, nor do I care about anyone elses reviews on Defying Gravity. All I do care is that with just the pilot alone I was HOOKED and ready for more.THANKS A LOT ABC.
Heinz Mannberger Whatever else is true about Defying Gravity, I thought the art had a nice touch to it; from the interior and exterior of the ship, to the costumes and the gear of the astronauts. It might not live up to the standards of more science-based speculations as to the future of space travel, but it certainly has a recognizable flavour of its own.Other reviews have already commented on the ridiculous and juvenile conversations and motivations of the characters in this series. From their incoherent giggling, being unable to control their sexual urges, to disregarding critical instructions from mission control, these 'astronauts' are almost insulting to the real men and women who were and are a part of the space programs of Earth's various nations. After giving up on the series relatively early, I read about how the story was supposed to have unfolded over the course of a few seasons. Though this outline was filled with the same unimpressive high school level personal drama that featured in the released episodes, there was actually quite an interesting spark of imagination underlying it all. The premise for this massive journey around the solar system might have been implausible, but there is not necessarily something wrong with that in the speculative genre that science fiction is.Sadly, it seems a desire to drag the series out over various years led to the more interesting story being sidelined in favour of the same kind of cookiecutter 'drama' that you can find in dozens of other forgettable series.
rlandmann My first impressions of this show are very conflicted. On the one hand, it's a real joy to be watching a near-future space exploration show with mostly realistic hardware. Seriously: Antares is maybe one of the best thought-out deep-space exploration vessels depicted on film or TV. On the other hand, the two episodes I watched were more about the tawdry personal lives of the astronauts than about space exploration. There's a long tradition of hard sci-fi being used as a backdrop for psychological exploration, and although there's a faint note of that in this show too, it's no "2001" or "Solaris". However, some time is devoted to astronauts dwelling on and having to come to terms with past decisions.Against all that, I was interested to learn that the show had been pitched as "Gray's Anatomy in Space", because that's more or less how it plays out. I really, really didn't care who was bedding whom though, I just wanted to see how the mission played out.As a final hook, it becomes evident very early on that there's something aboard the Antares that mission control on earth knows about and the crew do not. I can't wait to find out more! :)
Michael S. Honestly, it is my first review at IMDb.com. I was so surprised by the low rating at 6.9 that I decided to write this review. This TV series deserves at least 9.0.For anyone who loves science-fiction TV series and space exploration in general, you will love this TV series. I am very surprised that it lasted only one season. The actors are really good. There is a beautiful love story, there is an intriguing science-fiction element that needs further inquiry, and the acting is basically excellent. There was so much potential to have several seasons with this TV series. It is a shame that it did not happen. Maybe it was costly to do, as the visual effects are also excellent. The only kind of difficult area is the way they explained the science-fiction element of this TV series. It is not done as clearly as it should have been and you have to wait quite a few episodes before you get clarification on this matter. In the meantime, enjoy the acting and the love story. If you like a good story, excellent acting, science-fiction elements, you will enjoy this TV series. I saw it once (13 episodes). Then, loving it so much, I watched it again a day later and I enjoyed it even more than the first time I watched it!!Here are mostly TV series and a few movies that I highly recommend, as I watched them and enjoyed them a lot.--------------------------------------------------------There are a few classics in science-fiction TV series:---Smallville---Star Trek: Enterprise---Babylon 5---Earth: Final Conflict---Battlestar Galactica---Star Wars (6 movies so far and counting)---Jupiter Ascending (a movie)all deserving 15 out of 10 because they are all very special TV series for the quality of their stories and for the amazing actors that they have. Are these TV series perfect? No, as they sometimes have "filler" episodes that are not too great and they also sometimes have "holes", illogical elements in the main story or in the individual stories of particular episodes. Despite sometimes the presence of these very few shortcomings, these TV series are really unique and special in many ways that you will nevertheless enjoy them greatly.Other TV series that are excellent but not necessarily science-fiction? Here is my list of other excellent TV series that you will appreciate a lot:--A few more science-fiction:---Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome (it is science-fiction)---Caprica (it is science-fiction)---Babylon 5: Thirdspace (it is science-fiction)---Space: Above and Beyond (it is science-fiction)---Defying Gravity (it is science-fiction)---The Tomorrow People (it is science-fiction)---The 100 (it is science-fiction)---Almost Human (it is science-fiction)--Non-science fiction:---24---24: Live Another Day---Dexter---The Vampire Diaries (it is fantasy I could call it)---Breaking Bad---Kyle XY (it is slightly science-fiction)---Nikita---Damages--------------------------------------------------------
