Reviews

Kingslaay Dallas couldn't have asked for a better start for its reboot that takes place decades after the first series ended. The next generation of Ewings face off over the Ewing fortunes and Southfork. The plot and story lines for John Ross, Christopher, JR and Bobby were mesmerizing and captivating, it was easy to get hooked. With interesting plots and business dealings Dallas never ceased to entertain. John Ross and Christopher were excellent in picking up the Mantle from the previous generation. After the first season ratings and reviews were high and this was my favorite modern TV show. Sadly Season 2 started to take a downward spiral towards the end and Season 3 followed that trend. After Larry's passing the producers panicked and couldn't continue delivering the stellar work they did in season 1. Dallas could have certainly done with formidable villains. Cliff should have never gone so evil like he did in Season 2 but remained an untrustworthy character, the Barnes and Ewing feud has been milked enough. They needed a new adversary and when they tried to do this with Travino it was badly done and hugely disappointing. Not to mention the unwanted Mexico connection. Dallas has a great history and the new creators often forget that. Once the dust settled after season 1 people would see the inconsistencies and errors. Didn't JR have more than one child, what happened to his other children? Why do we never see other family members much? When Ray and Lucy showed up they were always paired together for some odd reason and had little screen time. Having said all that the show was not so bad and didn't deserve to be cancelled. Ratings are far worse for other shows on the air. I think things may have turned around with John Ross making an evil transformation into JR. Sadly we will never find out.
desgrant22 I treated myself to the original Dallas box-set last Christmas as they were a steal at around €100 for the whole series on single sided disks. I remember them from the very start and were compelling viewing every week. After 35 years they are still fun to watch again. What made the original so good is that is was very sharply written, was full of black humour, marvellous character actors who played bankers, oil men, politicians and even J.Rs shady private detectives. I could go on and on. (Pity about the showing of previews before the episodes begin. This sorta ruined it for me and would have been better if they had shown last on Dallas and not next on Dallas)Any let's get to the New Dallas:I am joining the one star merchants on this as this New Dallas is really scraping the bottom of the oil barrel on ideas and can only be described as appalling. It was shameful to watch J.R. as a feeble old man along with the other original cast members bickering and fighting like a bunch of stupid kids. Not even J.R (R.I.P) can salvage this debacle. I'm not going to go over the ground of the other wiser and older one star merchants. This series has woeful actors and acting. The muzak is ear shattering and it is going nowhere very fast. Young over made up and useless actress combined with useless, witless, charmless male actors and all wishing they were doing something else. As I write this, the last appearance of Larry Hagman was just shown and as bad as season one was, this season is ten times worse. I was very surprised when the commissioned a second series and actually tortured us with an additional five episodes. If this goes to a third season I will start eating body parts. You know the old sayings, Let sleeping dogs lie, if it ain't broke.
markus-appel Well, well, well... ...as probably one of the biggest fans of the original series (and a German tourist who actually visited Southfork as some sort of "sacred" place in 2003) I must admit that I actually didn't know about the new series until it had already started. Having watched the first season now I must say that I don't care about glitches in the plot, far-fetched stories and somewhat ludicrous biographies. The question I asked myself is: Was I entertained? And the answer is: YES YES YES! J.R. is better than ever, actors' performances (even those of Chris and John Ross) are sometimes (not always) superb. After all those years of abstinence it was about high time to see the Ewings back in the ring. I thank you TNT!!!
Roxsana Haq I recall the original as I watched quite a bit of it as a child. I do think that Dallas 2012 has the potential to be even better than the old series as the story lines are more thought out. However I did love the original for the cheese and glam factor and it was a guilty pleasure. Its a good start so far and I'm so glad Bobby and JR Ewing are playing real-time ages and they help to build that nostalgic feeling along with the South fork ranch. The casting is good especially Jesse Metcalf as he really looks the part and surprisingly acts well too. However the actress that plays Elena (Jordana Brewer)doesn't seem to fit the bill, she is too gaunt and skull-like (great description from another reviewer!)and this makes the love triangle seem unrealistic at times. If she put on even 7lbs she may look as good as she did in Fast and Furious, she looks old and haggard right now almost like a recovering anorexic.Apart from that a good first series and I look forward to the season finale next week and hopefully not too long of a wait for season 2 hopefully with more glamour , good looking people and all the other trappings of the wealthy we love to dream about!
