alex-278 To say that the mind borders on stupification while trying to comprehend this dirge is an understatement. I can truly say that I do not think I have ever seen such a silly predictable almost comic stream of vignettes stitched together to form what to all intents is a farce. To steal a comment that Churchill allegedly made during his private viewing of Citizen Kane - "Rubbish, Rubbish, Bloody Rubbish.". I can't put my finger on it, but it is very much like a comic book version of Grand Budapest Hotel where all the characters are surreal and have costumes that are meant to define their character type rather than relying on any form of character development or dialogue. You end up having absolutely no interest in the characters, they just stroll in make a few comments and then disappear. So if you think this is about the development of the jet engine after the war then you are in for a surprise - it is not.How did one of my favourite actors, Jim Sturgess get involved in this truly bizarre film? I don't know but I urge you to watch it to see if you can contain your laughter.
jcossins I thought this was such a change from the usual dramas on the TV, which basically try to replicate real life. This is really stylised, and I love it! The whole atmosphere of the series is quite odd and intriguing and seems like it is almost made for a stage production, simply because the settings are only in a few distinct locations. I know it has a historical setting but it is a drama not a documentary, and therefore does not have to include real historical figures or events (something that I think some of the reviewers have got a bit confused with...) The acting is great, despite what other reviewers have said. I think other people are disappointed because the acting seems wooden and the language a bit stunted, but this is because of the stylisation (if that is a word!) of the production. Also I wonder whether the fairly level tone - ie not a lot of polarity between calm and excitement - made people rather bored, but I loved this aspect of the production. It's interesting that of all the negative reviews I read, almost all of the authors of those reviews did watch all episodes or 6/7 episodes - surely if it was that bad they would have stopped after the first episode? This drama has really polarised people into a "love it" or "hate it" side. I am definitely in the "love it" side. And I loved this so much that this is the first review I have written.
buddersburgess I put up with it to the end, as the period setting interested me. Having Jim Sturgess and Alfred Molina, baited me. At the end of each episode I contemplated whether to stay with it. The final episode held so much hope - I watched with baited breath and baited was how I felt. Total anti-climax, utterly disappointing. Acting was dreadful but hoped the final 'revelation' would compensate = not on your nellie!Yet another 'pure drama' that ended up as 'pure drivel'. Time for the Drama Crown to be placed on the head of another channel - possibly Channel 4?Well done BBC - you backed the wrong horse, yet again.
Sasha Lubetkin (sashalubetkin) I started watching this series with high hopes, but am sad to say that they were soon dashed. First, there is a lot of embarrassing over-acting. Secondly, I found myself increasingly distracted by the accent of the hero - a sort of dodgy mid-Atlantic which would never have been adopted by a man of Ferguson's social class in the 1940s. Even worse is the accent of his younger brother, who sounds like a cockney. It's little - apparently insignificant - details like this which make suspension of disbelief quite impossible. A pity, because the locations are fascinating, and production values admirable. What's more, there is some fine acting from subsidiary characters.
