This was a better stand-alone series than it was a prequel.I thought the first two seasons of Battlestar Galactica were great, and I was immensely pleased with the shift presented in Caprica. Instead of an action-packed, space-warring, post-apocalyptic survival series; we are given a stylish business and crime science fiction drama. That vision was excellently conceived and adequately executed. The plot was interesting, and the subplots contributed to a pleasantly complicated picture. It all fell apart, however, in the areas where they tried to hard to connect it to Battlestar Galactica. They didn't need to make the "Adams" family that particular family. They did it for the connection to Battlestar Galactica, and it actually undermines (or replaces) what we knew of them in BSG. We didn't need to see the first use of every BSG phrase - Cylon (okay maybe that one was permissible), Toaster, and Skin Job (this one, in fact, shouldn't have been around until BSG). The final episode was the worst in this regard. It gives a contradictory account to many of the factual (and major) elements of BSG. The origins of _______ are contradicted, and the whole god thing (which was, admittedly, bewildering in BSG) is undermined and redirected in the final episode. I'm sure they were hoping for a full second season, but I think we were spared a disaster when the show was canceled. Had they kept going, they looked on track to make everything worse.

The action is going on distant world but the problems the plot evolves around regard our modern society. Series explores a future that is not so distant and may serve as a warning of what comes next. That puts it the real science fiction category. We can't say the same for the majority of the movies produced today, can we? Caprica engages to think about issues that every sane child, adult or parent should be aware of. Issues that concerns individuals, group of people and society. If you IQ is high enough then chance is that you will find the series appealing. If you would like to check for yourself it is enough to watch the pilot. It is less than two hours long and can confirm what I wrote above.

Wow. I just finished watching Season 1 of Caprica, and I was really amazed how beautifully crafted this story was. I have not seen such intelligent Sci-Fi on TV since....well....never. It felt almost like a great Asimov Story, but even better. The way A.I., religion, morality...etc. are explored was very refreshing and inventive. This is the only "prequel" of any kind that is actually successful in its concept and execution. I was exremely impressed, and I believe for true hard-core sci-fi novel fans, this show exceeded our expectations, surpassing BSG itself with regard to real thought-provoking and relateable ideas. It is truly a great shame that our average American viewing audience, these days, has been systematically dumbed-down to accept any old crap that the networks put out, but a real meaty-mind-blower like Caprica gets cancelled after the first season. This is Even worse than what they did to Firefly. It's a real crying shame. Anyway, Caprica still stands on its own as a little Sci-Fi rare Jewel in a world of faux gems.
