Two gay dudes frolic among the wild animals and sleep with a white tiger who feels a need to protect gays. The Beastmaster TV series was so gay that it was hilarious to watch. Dar the Beastmaster finds a very feminine and passive friend, Tao, who spontaneously dedicates his life to living with the Beastmaster. The show would have been better if they just both came out as gay since the first episode. The villains are straight out of some sado-masochistic gay fantasy world. Mean guys who are very buff, and always wearing leather, are chasing down Dar or Tao to punish them in some degrading way. The villains posture, growl and want to tie up the Beastmaster and torture him. Sometimes they do. The Beastmaster TV series was like if the original Beastmaster Marc Singer, had met Al Pacino in CRUISING, and they had a super gay baby. Every episode was basically the same. Occasionally a gorgeous witch, like Monica Schnarre would be involved in the story. Nobody ever hooked up with the hot models. It was always guy on guy adventure. If you are bi-curious or gay, this is a great TV series to watch.

Why was Monika Schnarre replaced briefly by another actress that looked like Uma Thurman with a long blonde ponytail and a lot of eye shadow/makeup. However, I'm not complaining since I liked this sorceress also. I just thought it was the same one and they got another actress to play her. Originally, I missed some episodes and when I tuned in all of sudden there she was-a new sorceress! Later in reruns, I saw Monika's sorceress character encased in amber and apparently trapped there. But did Monika's contract only run for the 1st season and the the first few episodes of the 2nd season and that's why she had to be replaced or it was definitely part of the storyline. Apparently the second sorceress didn't work out and her run was limited and Monika returned. Maybe the producers sensed that Monika was more popular with the fans since she was the original sorceress. Anyways, I watched the show mainly because of Daniel Goddard with his bulging biceps and his tush in that skimpy loin cloth costume. He was just pure eye candy-so move over Monika Schnarre and second sorceress and all of the other sorceresses- jeez, I will never want to type that word ever again! I'd like to eventually buy the the whole series but has anyone noticed how expensive they are- what's up with that? There are sellers on an online DVD site selling Season 3 alone for over $100!

It seems from watching that the producers of this series didn't take the time to plan their "bible" before beginning the series. The basic story, handed down from Andre Norton through the series of films, was fine, but this kind of high-concept fantasy series requires an established mythology to guide the storytelling. This one seemed to flounder around without much dramatic impetus. The leads were highly appealing, if inexperienced at the beginning of the series, and individual episodes were often entertaining. The final story arc over the last half of the final season was too slapdash and amateurish to redeem the series as a whole. While it did draw the story to a finish, it wasn't a particularly compelling finish; the appearance of Marc Singer (the star of the Beastmaster films) was a silly stunt. One can only hope that Daniel Goddard and Jackson Raine move on to better projects--both are appealing enough to merit it.

My son, Simon Burnett, is the stunt double for Daniel, so we have been watching every episode. It comes across as at least two shows in one. The out of doors, walking in the woods and fighting. And the other, the mystical- fairy one, with special effects and clothing. It would work better if the mystical world was only at night, a dream scape for the characters and story line.
