merry-prankster-online This is one of the most gorgeous series every filmed. It has an interesting story and first rate acting. But WOW, Netflix really screwed up the English versions. The English dubbed sound track should just be destroyed and pretend it never existed. I think the dubbing actors must have been working from nothing but a script and didn't yet have the video to watch. I hate dubbing anyway, but only started watching the dubbed version because...The English subtitles also leave a lot to be desired. Whoever translated the German to English obviously wasn't a fluent English speaker and shouldn't have been selling translation services on this level. Let's hope Netflix sees fit to fix the English subtitles so this series can shine. It truly is glorious.
johnalcock-913-788551 First couple of episodes were very good. Cinematography is excellent, actors are good, production values are very impressive and the storyline is interesting at first. But after eight or so episodes, it just drags. Really slow, and seems to meander between the sub plots, and revisit events unnecessarily. I found myself struggling to summon enough enthusiasm to finish the series, mostly persuaded by the hours I had already invested rather than any excitement to watch the conclusion.
jimboalistair Stylish, suspenseful and dangerously addictive. At its height, Babylon Berlin is one of the best foreign language TV shows out there. It is well acted and mostly well written but does lose itself at times in the many interweaving plot lines and can at times leave you with a bad taste in your mouth with its sometimes sloppy writing but nevertheless, Babylon Berlin is a must watch for any fan of historical dramas.
joepetroch The story and setting is quite unique and compelling for this day in age: Wiemar Berlin.Negative: The dubbing into English sounds poor. A previous person commented on this in some detail. Strongly recommend watching in German with English subtitles. Some aspects of this plot are unclear and the clarity would have been appreciated. E.g., our protagonist's hazy / barbiturate-affected recollection of being pursued by "the saint" that seems to be revealed more and more over the last handful of episodes. It sufficiently confused me to the point of wondering if he had actually retrieved the reel-to-reel tapes to which so many are subject to blackmail or if that was some sort of dream sequence / induced memory? Lastly, whoever translated the date of the battle in which our protagonist abandons his brother: in German it was November 4, 1918. The translation into English comes out as Nov 14, 1918, but the war had ended on November 11, 1918. Also some of the translations into English are literal and thus somewhat nonsensical, but this is a very, very small quibble with a well done series such as this.
