This show is okay. It's funny at first but it just feels really repetitive. 5 out of 10.

The spineless Micheal Bluth gets fooled over and over by his mentally and socially "challenged" family members. And all is justified with this "family comes first" bs all the time.
It has its funny moments and a few nice twists, but the characters are implausible, embarrassing and pathetic and the script is plain stupid. Every character is exaggerated in a way it's not funny anymore, but mostly annoying, except Micheal, Lindsay, Maeybe and perhaps Buster. But this back and forth with Micheal gets boring after 5 seasons. And none of the character develops.
And Micheal still hasn't grown some b...ls after 5 seasons.
Only recommended for shallow minds.

I found the first few episodes OK and kept watching because I generally love shows and movies about dysfunctional selfish people and their interactions. Intelligent perspectives on human behavior are comedy goldmines. Unfortunately this show gradually stops portraying the characters as unlikable dysfunctional people but rather wants us to find them hilarious and adorable. It doesn't succeed in making them hilarious and adorable either so after a while you are just watching a bunch of people talking to each other, repeating recycled jokes. You get bored. The story lines are excruciatingly slow and empty. There are themes that they insist on going on and on with that are just not funny, like the old lady dating Buster or the father going Jewish in prison were just cringe (S 1). Same themes have been really funny in other shows so it's just a matter of the writers and producers not being able to deliver. All in all, the actors really do a good enough job, and I might have given it a 5. But the racial humor cost them those extra stars in my review. Racial humor can be very entertaining. But again, they couldn't deliver on that either and the jokes are just vulgar and downright racist. I get the feeling this was made for a niche market and I am definitely not in the target group. Im guessing the good reviews come from people who are more or less in that niche, or they were written after having watched just a few episodes? If you like intelligent comedy about human interaction, a story line that moves forward and pauses with subplots that are funny and not repeated to death, if you don't enjoy racism creeping up on you, then you are not in the target group either.

After viewing several episodes, I found this to be a witty, and sometimes delightfully funny program. Droll, hardworking, and recently widowed Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman) has to endeavor with his father's (Jeffrey Tambor) imprisonment (in part to his real-estate company trading practices) his pampered mother Lucille (Jessica Walter), twin sister Lindsay, younger brother Byron "Buster" Bluth and his out-of-work oldest brother magician GOB. (or George Oscar Bluth II, pronounced "Jobe"). After George Sr. is sent to prison, the unbearable family members turn to Michael to head the corporation and handle their funds. Through it all, Michael has a son, George Michael, a timid and rather confounded young man who idolizes his daddy, has a mild infatuation with his only cousin, Maeby (Lindsay's daughter), and is in charge of the semi-popular Bluth frozen banana stand at Newport Beach's Balboa Island. Not to mention the unexplainable Carl Weathers guest appearances, Ron Howard's uncredited narration, and brother-in-law Tobias' acting attempts, this program deserves its merit.
