Natalie Collins One of my top five favorite movies of all time (and I'm including the sequels)! Each cast member is sheer perfection in his/her role. Trying to remake this incredible movie was not a great idea in my opinion...there's no way to make it better, so why bother to remake it? That attempt in 2016 ended up as a disaster to me. Megan Follows will always be Anne Shirley. The late Jonathan Crombie will always be Gilbert Blythe...and so it goes through the whole cast. The casting director must be brilliant! I fell in love with the the cast, the scenery, the script from the first glimpse of this magnificent interpretation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's wonderful writing. I can't even count the times I've watched the whole series...it's pure joy and delight, tears and laughter...every single time!
phylliswin Anne of Green Gables is a movie that holds a special place in my heart. I first saw this with my mother years ago, and it quickly became our favorite movie. We must have watched it every time we were together. And no matter how many times we watched it, every viewing always seemed like the first time all over again. We laughed and cried at all the same places, and couldn't wait until the day when Gilbert and Anne would finally be together. My mother developed cancer and suffered for two years. This movie was a wonderful escape for her and myself. I lost her 4 months ago, and at first I thought I would never be able to watch this movie ever again, but I was wrong. It only means that much more to me now. For now it holds even more wonderful memories. This is a movie that is meant to be shared with someone special. Just as I did.
pippinmaniac I was about 12 years old when I found L. M. Montgomery's novel, "Anne of Green Gables" at a small community library. I was immediately taken by orphan Anne Shirley and her various misadventures, and grew to love all the characters of Avonlea. Prince Edward Island went to the top of my list of places to visit in the future. Anne was a girl with character-not a put-upon girl who was afraid to speak up for herself. That was a refreshing change from many books aimed at young ladies "back in the day". I have to say that this show was wonderful to see. Megan Followes "was" Anne. Colleen Dewhurst "was" the crusty but lovable Marilla. My favorite was Richard Farnsworth's portrayal of Matthew, the shy, sweet bachelor brother of Marilla. For those who aren't familiar with the story, Matthew and Marilla decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew around the farm. The orphanage makes a mistake and sends Anne. Matthew doesn't have the heart to send her back, so they travel on to Green Gables, Matthew and Marilla's house. Needless to say, Marilla is not amused, but Anne eventually wins her heart. With a temper as fiery as her hair, and a quick mind and huge vocabulary, Anne quickly makes a friend of Diana Barry and catches the eye of Gilbert Blythe. Anne's adventures made for great reading. I am happy to say that this production catches the spirit of the story beautifully. I cried just as hard at the end of this movie as I did at the end of the book when Matthew died. Another 10 from me!
artistathome I believe the Megan Follows production is surely the best of all the versions that have been produced... I saw the 1934 version with Tom Brown (wonderful actor) on TCM this morning. It was OK, but many things had been changed for some inexplicable reason! However, the production with Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst does not suffer when brought to the screen. Being a mini-series it takes its time to show us the characters and all their quirks. In my opinion, no production can compare to the Megan Follows version. It's simply brilliant. All the actors embodied their roles to perfection.I watched it over a Saturday and Sunday, 6 years ago, as there were at least 2 tapes and maybe more. Later on, I tried to read the books but after seeing Megan Follows, I just couldn't. Perhaps I am too old now...after all, they are children's books with all the fantasies woven in that children have.I recommend this production to everyone--this movie will blow your socks off. Megan with her flaming and flowing hair is such a perfect Anne. I cannot explain how wonderful the actors are playing Marilla and Matthew. You just have to see it yourself.
