Here are the matches...Tito Santana v Executioner (Buddy Rose under a mask): An interesting start to Wrestlemania showing Tito on fine form. Little did poor Tito realise he was going to lose every match in the next 7 Wrestlemanias to come. I loved that perfect timing bump where The Executioner got flipped over the top rope and he actually ended up sitting in a chair on the way down, lol. The match ended when Tito made Executioner submit to the figure-four leg-lock. Tito lost so often not many people realised it was one of his signature moves.4/10'Special Delivery' Jones v 'King Kong' Bundy: 'SD' Jones was more a 'jobber to the stars' at this point in the same way Tito would be in later Wrestlemanias. He had no chance! Bundy running avalanched and splashed Jones before he knew what day it was. The match was announced as lasting 9 seconds to push Bundy's status as a monster but it was a little longer than that.1/10 Ricky Steamboat v Matt Bourne: Ricky Steamboat dominated most of the match and never in the least looked troubled by Bourne. I believe Steamboat would consider that outing a night off in comparison to what he is normally capable of. Matt Bourne would return to the WWF 8 years later as Doink the Clown.3/10 David Sammartino v Brutus Beefcake: David follows his dad's footsteps by entering his only PPV against an impressively built Beefcake. David's father, Bruno, would accompany him to ringside and be part of an angle. It was mat wrestling all the way until Beefcake's manager Johnny Valiant beat David up outside the ring. Bruno would promptly come to his son's aid and all four people ended up brawling to a double disqualification finish which was a lame way to finish this. Despite the ending, the occurrence received a massive pop.4/10 Junkyard Dog v Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine: After some typical JYD offence (crawling headbutts etc), Valentine quickly gains advantage by working on JYD's leg. JYD grabs hold of Jimmy Hart who stands on the ring apron and Hammer attempts to blind-side JYD but misfires and hits his manager instead. JYD starts punching Hammer and, inexplicably, it only takes a rake to the eyes and a roll-up with feet on the ropes for Valentine to get the pin. Afterwards, Tito Santana got to the ring and told the referee what really happened and the decision was overturned. Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine got counted out while thinking he had the match won. Why did it take Greg Valentine longer than 10 seconds to work out what was going on? A lazy match.3/10The US Express (Mike Rotundo and Barry Windham) v Iron Shiek and Nikolai Volkoff for the WWF tag team titles: The match doesn't start without the obligatory Russian national anthem being sung by Nikolai Volkoff. Mike Rotundo beyond his short initial WWF career had limited success as 'Michael Wallstreet' in WCW but would gain better fame in a similar guise returning to the WWF as tax-man 'Irwin R Schyster' which would last for approximately 5 years. Barry Windham gained more success in WCW but would come back to the WWF for a short time as Widowmaker. The match ends when Iron Sheik smacks Windham in the back with Blassie's cane (the cane actually breaks off his back) and Volkoff gains the pin to become new WWF Tag Team Champions. A relatively fast-paced match.6/10 Andre the Giant v 'Big'John Studd $15,000 slam match: The stipulation for this match was if Andre slammed Studd he would receive $15,000 and if Studd slammed Andre then Andre would retire. The referee counts Studd out at one point during the match until Andre reminds him that count-outs don't make a slight bit of difference. There was a lot of plodding about and a couple of slam attempts before Andre finally gets it done much to my relief. Andre takes the money and starts giving it to the crowd before Studd's manager Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan snatches the bag from Andre and runs off with it. Unsatisfactory on many levels.2/10Wendi Richter vs Leilani Kai for the WWF women's title: I'll give it to Richter and Kai, they didn't let up in this match and the crowd were into it. Lauper plays her part too by fending off The Fabulous Moolah and ends when Richter attempts an awkward reversal on Kai's body-cross from the top-rope and gets the pin. After the match Moolah trips up getting into the ring, lol. During the post-match interview, I believe Lauper was either bleeding or she got more lipstick on her teeth than her lips.5/10Hulk Hogan and Mr T v 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff: Roddy Piper comes to the ring with a full bagpipe band playing along with his tag partner Orndorff and 'Cowboy' Bob Orton wearing the infamous cast on his hand. Hogan and Mr T along with 'Superfly' Jimmy Snuka come to the ring for a huge pop. The match is quite a train-wreck in that the majority of it was disorganised brawling but that chaos factor added the excitement. The end arrives when Orton climbs to the top rope and accidentally hits Orndorff with the cast. Piper abandons Orndorff and Orndorff leaves the ring humiliated. Mr T does his best but, despite having an ego to match Hogan's, doesn't have the charisma to match. All in all, an entertaining end to the event.6/10The first Wrestlemania was rather bland. Most matches were house show level and some genuinely disappointed me (the slam match and JYD vs Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine in particular). However, because of the significance of this event, it's difficult to get too tough on 'the grand-daddy of them all'. Without this Wrestlemania we wouldn't have had the others. The main event was pretty good and that is what people paid to see.

Say what you want about the simplistic lighting, lack of todays glitzier production values, and the couple of jobber matches, but you cannot die that this was the one that started it all, and that it is indeed PURE '80s. You also cannot die the electricity felt when watching parts. Sure it drags during the first two or three matches, but if you can honestly tell me you don't feel the excitement with the pops for JYD, Andre, Albano & The US Express, Wendi Richter and Cyndi Lauper, and of course Hogan & Mr. T, then I can tell you that you are honestly not a true wrestling fan. Is it cheesy? Yes. But wasn't that the way of the '80s? And don't even tell me "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" doesn't get stuck in your head after watching this...:-) Well worth the view.
