Uriah43 FBI Agent "Jack Crawford" (Jason Statham) is obsessed with finding the assassin named "Rogue" (Jet Li) who killed his partner "Tom Lone" (Terry Chen) along with Lone's wife and child. His obsession is so severe that it eventually results in the breakup of his own marriage. However, as fate would have it the assassin just happens to reappear in San Francisco several years afterward at the same time that a war breaks out between the Japanese Yakuza and one of the Chinese Triads. In no time Jack Crawford has his hands full as the body toll rises and Rogue begins appearing—and then disappearing—like a ghost. At any rate, rather than reveal any more I will just say that I thought that this was an outstanding movie—at least for the most part. Unfortunately, the director (Phillip G. Atwell) apparently got carried away and it really tended to unravel towards the end. As a result, instead of ranking this movie quite high, I have to downgrade this film to just slightly above average.
SnoopyStyle FBI agents Jack Crawford (Jason Statham) and Tom Lone (Terry Chen) take on the Yakuza. Tom thinks he shot infamous assassin Rogue (Jet Li) but Rogue returns to massacre him and his family. Three years later, Rogue resurfaces working for Triad boss Li Chang (John Lone) against his former employers, the Yakuza. Jack is now the head of the FBI Asian Crime Task Force and divorced from his wife Jenny (Andrea Roth). Yakuza head sends his daughter Kira (Devon Aoki) to handle an important deal in San Francisco.Philip G. Atwell is more of a music video director. He needs to do a few more of these films before he can get a handle on this. It's a lot of flash and a lot of pose acting in the place of real tension and intensity. The action is good at times but not great. It's not wild enough to be crazy. Jason Statham is trying his best and Jet Li keeps up even with his limited English. Atwell just doesn't have the skills yet. It's a good first effort.
Wizard-8 You might think that a movie that has both Jet Li and Jason Statham would have a lot of promise, especially since the movie managed to get the great Corey Yuen to choreograph the fight scenes. But the movie manages to be a big disappointment. Oh, the movie looks pretty slick and polished, and the script does have a couple of (so-so) twists. But despite my love of action films and being fans of the two stars, I wasn't terribly interested while watching the movie. There's surprisingly little martial arts action, and what there is is so badly directed and edited that it can't hold a candle to the expert martial arts found in Hong Kong films. In fact, the other action in the movie (gun battles, etc.) is also badly directed and edited. The screenplay is also substandard, with a slow-moving and pretty boring story, as well as there being no character we really sympathize with, at least before the last few minutes. Also, action fans will likely be annoyed that Li and Statham don't share that much screen time together. What a waste of talent!
Dubh I start to believe that Mr Statham is a bit overrated. He has no great acting skills: the plot has a nice twist, but it is on the whole devalued by his poor performance. Statham seems better when he can play the introverted type, not the guy he plays here. Still, it is a great pleasure to watch Jet Li impersonate another interesting character. Just to be fair, the twist in the plot is the only good thing about it: the rest is either run-of-the-mill oriental crime movie or unbelievable things (just to name one, how has an agent from FBI transformed into a secret weapon of such devastating power?). All in all, a good subject half-wasted on a half-good movie.
