Found it on Netflix streaming movies.Sarah Michelle Gellar, about 30 when this was filmed, is New York career woman Veronika Deklava. The opening scene is just her among thousands of others taking the train to work, as we hear her thoughts. They are mundane, she will continue to work the way her parents expect her to, she will meet a guy some day, they will marry, perhaps have children, he will cheat on her because she works too much, she will try to overlook it. With that kind of jaded outlook it is no wonder that when she gets home she lines up her various drugs in overdose mode and downs them with booze.Of course she sent a farewell email so medics are sent to her home and they break into her apartment. When she awakes, in a medical facility, she has been in a coma for some time, her heart had stopped, and in the process generated an aneurysm that was inoperable and her time alive was limited, she had maybe a day, maybe a week to live, no one could be certain. So she settles in at this facility, run by a Psychiatrist that tries to get her to open up, try to be joyous. But my own thoughts were, if she tried to kill herself, and now has a very short time anyway, why bother? The break comes when she identifies with the pain of another patient, Jonathan Tucker as Edward, depressed and mute since an auto accident that killed his girlfriend. On a whim Veronika uncovers the old piano and plays classical music she was trained for, Edward seems to respond. Maybe she can now see purpose in her existence? All the actors are good, and Brit David Thewlis plays the Psychiatrist Dr. Blake. It is a slow-moving movie but also very nice if one has the patience to see it all the way through, as critical scenes don't come until near the end.SPOILERS: The hospital, near the Hudson River outside the city, is not voluntary and patients can't leave by their own volition. But after Veronika and Edward no longer want to be there he leads the two of them on an escape, find a train, and head to Manhattan. While they are escaping we learn that Dr. Blake lied about Veronika, using the medical tests of a former patient. She did not have an aneurysm and was not dying soon, he only wanted to try it as a way to spark her interest in living. He resigned and left to visit an old colleague, while Veronika and Edward visited on a park bench. Suddenly she went unresponsive and we think she has died but then she wakes up, she had just been tired, it seems she and Edward may have met their ideal mates and both will overcome their emotional baggage.

This film is about a young woman who attempts to kill herself by an overdose. She is admitted to a psychiatric hospital for treatment, and another chapter of her life enfolds. The book "Veronika Decides to Die" has a good word of mouth, and its author is world famous. So I thought the film would be good, and chose it for a film night with friends. It proved to be a disastrous decision. The film is so slow, tortuous and pretentious. There is so little material so they have to stretch everything to fill up the ninety minutes of screen time. I mean, how long do you have to watch the characters walking down a corridor or staring out the window? My friends started making excuses to leave about half way through, and one hour into the film, all seven friends have left. That's how boring "Veronika Decides to Die" is. My friends who have read the book said this adaption does not do the book justice, and there are seemingly pointless additions in the film. So, if you want yourself to be touched by the story, read the book instead.

As any other great story, it tells life is worth living. Understanding the point of matter to the story is really crucial. As important is the things to say, it is really how you say it. Some dialog do miss a certain emotional tone in this movie, but still it is worth watching.I don't like the score. It should have been better because it distracted the acting. I remember a guitar teacher says that you can make a Charlie Chaplin movie a very sad one by implementing a certain notes at a time. And that is what they should do with this one. Just one theme song great enough, this one has none. Acting wise, brilliant. What else do you expect? Sarah is great as always, but the dialog is better on some situation of emptiness, silence. Adding a score to some is just bad for the scene. I don't get the importance of other actors than the main ones, but the mixture is great anyway, so no complain there.Overall, this is a great movie. Great plot and ending, screenplay and such. Dialog could have been better, monologue is fantastic particularly at the beginning and the end. It is the music that kills the movie.

The first thing: I have not read the novel so this review is purely based on the what I saw on the screen, indifferent of how its being adopted from the book. And again Sarah Michelle Gellar scores with her performance as an innocent girl. I think she was the best suited for this role. So before discussing the story, which I guess most of you, would be acquainted with I want to talk about the direction which was the strength of the movie. The movie is not at all boring and characters are well handled .There were given a chance to fit in their respective roles. So I liked the acting and conversation between the characters very much. But still I can't say that the movie is flawless. As I finished watching the movie I found myself pretty satisfied with acting, story and movie overall. But still I get a feel that something was missing in the movie something that could have put this one in different league of top movies, the kind of movies which are award-worthy. One thing was lesser publicity, but leave that reason behind ...truth is maybe I could not digest the whole plot. Let me make myself clearer and discuss the storyline.Veronica (SMG) is a suicidal girl, she unsuccessfully tried to kill herself and was later admitted to a mental institution(kind of) for recovery. The doctor and other staffs of hospital tried to change her mindset and make her believe that life is worth living. But why she wanted to die? What she was expecting from her life, that she did not get? What happiness exactly meant to her? Was she seeking only love in her life? May be you wont find the proper answers to these questions ,but considering the fact that movie is purely based on the novel it wont be appropriate to question the storyline of the movie. So for me watching this movie was a nice experience.
