Reviews

Wuchak RELEASED IN 2003 and directed by Boaz Yakin, "Uptown Girls" is a dramedy with a little romance about Molly (Brittany Murphy), a fun-loving 22 year-old who suddenly loses her inherited riches and is forced to become a nanny to a stoical neat-freak girl, Ray (Dakota Fanning). Heather Locklear plays Ray's distant mother who's an exec in the music biz while Jesse Spencer plays a hunky musician who gets signed. Marley Shelton and Donald Faison are on hand as friends of Molly. The first act didn't do much for me, but at the halfway point something made me bust out laughing and I busted out four more times before it was over. More importantly, the movie is rich with quality mind/spirit food. Both Molly and Ray are broken people who handle their grief in opposite ways. And each has what the other needs to heal and escape their disorder."Uptown Girls" boldly reveals that "meds" (drugs) cannot heal or deliver a person; the best they can do is help a person cope. In fact, they usually have negative side-effects, mentally and physically. Sadly, six years after the release of the film Murphy ironically died of cardiac arrest due to inadvertent overdoses of a mixture of over-the-counter & prescription drugs taken (they presume) for a respiratory infection. She was only 32.The flick encourages growing up and achieving true success through (1.) recognizing "golden connections" and taking advantage of them (after all, no one makes it alone, no one; they had help); and (2.) discerning and cultivating one's special talent(s). I'd say more, but it's better to see the movie, enjoy it, and quarry the gems for oneself. THE MOVIE RUNS 1 hour 32 minutes and was shot in New York City (Manhattan & Brooklyn with studio work done in Queens). WRITERS: Julia Dahl, Mo Ogrodnik & Lisa Davidowitz wrote the script based on Allison Jacobs' story. GRADE: B+
Ariunsanaa T It is deep movie. I was emotional while watching this. I saw part of myself, my story on the screen. However it didn't want to be deep and serious movie. Instead the directors and writers wanted it to be light and cute. It's family friendly. I'll surely watch it again. It was emotional roller coaster for me. But who knows, it may be just me. For other person it might seem cheap wanna be flick. But that doesn't matter. It's my review and my feeling. And it's true that it seemed deep and touched me inside. Also it stars three or four of my wanna see actors. Little Dakota girl, late Brittany Murphy and a guy from Clueless. It's cute movie. And I'll cherish it.
CrystalRain7 Sure, this movie is cheesy and predictable. You know exactly what will happen after the first 10 minutes. So what? It makes me smile and it sometimes even makes me cry. I've seen this movie at least 3 or 4 times and it never gets old. Molly and Ray are both flawed, but that's what makes them so lovable. Their backgrounds are both extremely sad, but you eventually get a happy ending. Maybe I'm a sucker for feel-good, heartwarming movies but this truly a wonderful movie. If you are looking for something new and original, then this isn't the movie for you, but if you want something that will tug at your heartstrings and leave you with a smile and a happy feeling then go watch it! I promise you won't regret. Oh, and as a side note, I really enjoy the song "Molly Smiles".
insomniac_rod A fairly entertaining movie that could be labeled as a chick flick. This is the kind of movie where one of the two main characters (this time a little girl) has a really bad attitude caused by familiar problems and some other issues. But everything changes when she meets a hot but naive baby sitter that will take care of her always. Also, she teaches her lessons of life and helps her get through the different problems of being a young girl as the film points it out.As a man who is into Horror I can only say that this movie is recommended for an audience that enjoys this kind of romantic comedies that always have a positive message and a happy ending. The performances are alright. Brittany Murphy is sexy as always and always manages to deliver a fun performance. She's pretty fine. Dakota Fanning is very annoying but the girl is a very good actress.Just watch this movie and enjoy... To be honest I didn't expect it to be this "good". Recommended for women specially.
