Shreyance Parakh I had to make a conscious effort to move, after sitting motionless through the climax and the end credits. I don't recall seeing a darker Indian movie. When the movie ended, I felt UGLYNESS in my soul. That's not supposed to be a good thing, but I imagine that was the purpose. The story revolves around a 10 year old girl who goes missing. Her biological father is a struggling actor, her mother is an alcoholic and her husband is a top cop. Then there's a guy whose the actor's friend and is a casting director. There are a few more notable characters. The central characters are trying to figure out the whereabouts of the girl, but they all have bones to pick with each other. Here the title comes into play. What's uglier than the supposed kidnapping of the girl is that they all have their vested interests and that they're more keen on satisfying those then actually finding the girl. The journey to the climax brings out the ugliness within these flawed characters. And it's not one for the faint hearted. Anurag Kashyap is my favorite Indian director of this day and age so I'm always a bit biased towards his movies but Ugly has got to be his finest work till date. The story isn't flawless, but the direction is. Mr. Kashyap succeeds completely in bringing out the ugliness of his characters, who could easily be breathing and walking human beings amongst us, which makes it all the more chilling. The acting by entire cast was superb. Each and every one of them brought their characters alive on screen. You could feel strongly for them, hate, sorrow, pity and a lot more. The screenplay and editing is tight, dialogues too good and natural. I felt there were 2-3 loopholes and if not for them, the actual story could've been perfect. All in all a definite 9 out of 10 for me.
ashishbeohar Unnecessary starch i the story. Tried to make a good thriller but at the end i get the headache, It could have been better if there was a base story through out. A very bad thriller from my perspective. These are times when you think there is a story and suddenly it gets too messed up that you loose the charm of suspense and loose interest!
Jatin Bhatia this is a movie which makes us see pixels on a much larger painting up close like basic aspects of human behavior and character motivations and at the end grabs us by the arm and makes us watch the big "ugly" picture and no matter how hard we try to close our eyes it holds our eye lids open . So often we start fueling our lives by hate, jealousy, greed and how others perceive us that we stop living and start thinking that we'll find joy at our life's ext intersection and same is the case with the characters in this movie. An ex-husband who is a struggling to get a break as an actor and wants to regain his daughters custody and wife's affection. His wife who left him after his getting tired of his constant abuse,to go to a guy who loved her since college for comfort. The lover who just wants both of them to squirm to avenge the humiliation that he faced during his collage years and many other characters just as messed up as these and their struggle to get the girl back each with dark underlying motives of their own. Who are so blinded by them that they are unable to see the obvious truth which is right in front of them and can save the girl. this movie leaves a lot of room for interpretation and imagination a must watch for people who enjoy the genres crime and thriller
soham-86389 *This review may contain spoilers*Okay so this is my first IMDb review and I think that there was no other movie as perfect as Ugly to start writing.I am a movie addict, and not that guy who just watches Hollywood movies and curses all Bollywood movies. I enjoy Bollyood movies too.Well, I have loved Anurag Kashyap right since No Smoking, Gangs of Wasseypur etc. But this is another level, I am not kidding but this movie is comparable to all the Oscar winning movies ever, EVER. You are expecting a "Taken"-type ending i.e. Dad will find daughter after much struggle and so on.But no, you expect that as a normal movie watcher, even I expected that and then there was the end scene, right before me and I was struggling to decide what to do next. It had literally mind-boggled(I wanted to say something else, but IMDb doesn't approve) me. I did not expect the movie to go where it went...literally.The acting was top notch and perfect. Hope this movie gets more recognition and breaks into the Top 250.
