Synopsis

On September 1, 2001, Irish rock band U2 made a triumphant return to their roots with two outdoor shows at Slane Castle, Ireland. U2 chose the castle venue because it marked two watershed moments for the band: their recording session for the landmark album THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE in 1984, and their first Slane appearance opening up for fellow Irish rock band Thin Lizzy in 1981. U2 GO HOME captures the emotional intensity of the homecoming with 19 live tracks culled from the concerts.

leplatypus Music is the language of feelings, and for me, U2 embodies the best of humanity: Love, Peace, Compassion. Their songs, friendship, dedication are as much proof of this evidence. Who can't be moved by such integrity ? With this tour, they come back to simplicity: no big screen, no pop extravaganza… It's a pity: they were the only ones to deliver this package and it was as much fun as it was truth.About the music, I am disappointed to hear always the same classic on their DVD, even if all the "unplugged" songs are great: "Wake up", "Desire", "Staring at the sun", "Angel of Harlem"...But as long as I have those goose bumps: Thanks U2 for giving me such primal feelings! In bonus, you got a making-of about the song "Pride" 23 years ago at Slane Castle... Even after 3 big records, the band stayed simple (look at their clothes) and their only drive was music not money!!!!
dermottferry I own many U2 DVD's. I own all of U2's albums. I have plenty of t-shirts, posters etc. If my house was burning down and I had to grab one of these U2 items, it would be this DVD (just edging out Achtung Baby). The Elevation Tour was again a hugely successful tour for U2. Demand for the homecoming from fans resulted in Slane being played over two nights fpr the first time in its history.Despite playing around the world, this gig stands out- for two reasons. One- the boys had come home, to play in front of 80,000 people. Two, this concert came closely after the death of Bono's father. So the emotion was high as the boys stepped onto the stage like Kings taking their place on their throne. Then its time to sit back in amazement as Bono, Larry, Adam and Edge do what they do better than anyone- play live.Playing hits young and old, this is quite a show. Kicking off with the perfect start, 'Elevation', everyone in the audience screaming 'ooooooohhhhh',- not their best lyrically, but up there without a doubt with other great concert openers like Zoo Station.U2 then move on to an unbelievable performance of 'Beautiful Day'. A personal live favorite of mine, 'Until the End of the World' comes next, and is followed by the fantastic 'New Years Day'. The first real touching moment comes during the bands first single 'Out of Control', where Bono pronounces the Slane crowd as 'our tribe' and thanks them all for their support over the years.Other highlights of the show are 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' and the song 'Kite', which Bono dedicates to his late father Bob Hewson. But for me, the stand out performance is 'All I Want is You', leading into 'Where The Streets Have No Name.' Quite simply its magical. They're magical. This is a DVD that any U2 fan will probably have already. But if you don't- go get it right now!!
dso_35 The thing that makes the Slane Castle DVD exceptional is the sound quality. It's outstanding for a live show and the best I've heard on a concert DVD. For financial reasons I had to decide between the Slane Castle and the Live in Boston DVDs. I felt that the Slane DVD would be the better bet because I figured U2 would give their all doing a concert in their native country at a venue that had special meaning to them. Later on I was able to see the Live in Boston DVD and although I felt that it was very good in its own right and probably had better features, I felt overall the Slane DVD was better. The Slane DVD is superior because they just did a better job on the songs. There are a few songs on the Slane DVD that I actually like more than the original studio versions. They are: 'Out of Control'; 'Kite'; 'All I Want Is You'; and 'Bullet The Blue Sky'. Truly outstanding. I hate to use the word "beautiful" but the Edge's guitar-playing in 'With Or Without You' is exactly that. He's truly at his melodic best in that number. U2: Go Home is a great concert DVD and a must for anyone who digs U2.
Funkypizza2001 "U2: Live in Slane" has to be one of the most amazing concerts ever broadcasted on Network Television. The crowd in this concert was great, and U2 got them jumping and dancing with some of their classics such as "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "Where The Streets Have No Name." They also performed some of their early songs, like "Out of Control." Watching this concert, was like i was reliving the ones i went to. I'm part Irish, so maybe that's why i act as crazy as they do in concerts. Overall, this concert was amazing!!!
