Luis Alves A simple story...a story of winners. They suffered, they had a hard childhood. And despite of all these obstacles and because the perseverance of their father, they won. This is not just a cinematography. You'll find action, comedy and drama in this movie. Join it with your heart. A great movie. You don't need to know the story of these Brazilian singers to have moments of tenderness and joy.
Fat Freddy's Cat Curious that this was released in the same year as 'Walk The Line', because I saw a lot of parallels. Dirt poor boy from the backwoods becomes country music star. Also having a brother who dies horribly. I loved the performances by the parents and the child actors in close up focus but didn't feel emotionally overwhelmed by the big picture of their story. I think you would need to be Brazilian and a fan of ZC&L to feel that. There was a kind of presumption in the way it suddenly moved to its conclusion that we all knew the story from there on in - ZC&L become big stars. For those of us who had never heard of them before, we suddenly realise it's a fan-pic, and this comes as quite a surprise. I was a big fan of 'The Man in Black', who was obviously famous through the English speaking world, so I loved 'Walk the Line', but also felt it had more universal appeal in its message. This movie was preaching to the converted. 6/10
news-87 I've heard a lot about this movie. It's good as cinema, with a beautiful photography, good art direction and fair script and rhythm. There are funny and sad moments. But I can't see this movie as a Oscar-winner, or even as representative of a great Brazilian production. It's great for the fans of the singers; I can imagine them crying all the time... I'm sorry, but it doesn't go farther than a good soap opera, or an Indian Bollywood hit.Any Brazilian movie with good budget is pointed as a Oscar-winner. It happens every year. Come on, let's face it: this movie is good, but not good enough.
jlizano I really enjoyed it this movie. I saw this movie while visiting Brasil for the first time during the early parts of October 2005. Despite my limited mastery of the Portuguese language I was quickly taken in by this movie. I laughed; cried, celebrated and cried again as the movie engulfs you with its charm, scenery, music and its superb story line that flowed beautifully. Adding to its magic was the fact that I saw it with my new BRASILEAN girlfriend... Celia. It was truly an uplifting film that leaves you with a sense of hope. I highly recommend it to everyone.Javier Lizano
