Synopsis

The film was commissioned in 1988 by Leonard Stern as the first of a series on celebrity businessmen and finished in 1991. Back then, the only way for a film to be seen was on television or in the theater. Donald threatened to sue any broadcaster or distributor that took on the film. In effect, it was suppressed. It was screened twice in back-to-back standing room only showings at the Bridgehampton Community House on July 3, 1991, the same day that Donald announced his engagement to Marla Maples.

a_baron When this film was made, a quarter of a century ago - yikes! - people were ready to write off Donald Trump. One person who was not impressed with him was the late Christopher Reeve. What would he make of Donald J. Trump, President Elect of the United States? The people who put this film together were clearly not Trump supporters much less friends, although for the appearance of balance, some of the latter have been included. So was Trump a bully, a con man, even a snake oil salesman? None of that matters now, clearly he was and is a successful businessman, even if he did play footloose with the law at times, and get lucky when he could have gone bust. Time will tell if Americans have made the right decision, but another quarter of a century on, expect to see a far more favourable biography of Trump the politician: on film, on paper, and in the public perception.
jyund-80967 This is a good film. It is well done, and lays out the sleazy and dishonest career of New York's best known con man and bully. It's a fast moving, well documented story of an unprincipled man's rise to power, and the people he stepped on getting there. It uses clips and tells the story of exactly how he got his money, and the kind of dishonest tactics he utilized. It is well documented, with several first hand accounts of what its like to be on the Donald's hit list. If you ever wanted to know the gritty history behind the sleaze that is the Donald, this is a movie not to be missed.
