I really enjoy all three of the stories in this movie in different ways, I think it shows just how versatile an actress Karen Black really was, and it's a shame she never really got her due beyond having a 'cult' thing going on in her later years as a B-movie queen I guess.. I thought she was a really cool and interesting lady, and I love her in this. I totally buy her in all of her strange little roles, the deceptively timid wallflower type, the god-fearing old maid, the sexy drag queen-looking bombshell, or indeed just the regular unfortunate victim who's unexpectedly forced to fight for her life! I found the first two stories to be pretty effective and interesting slow burners, I like the twist of the first story, he picks her as an easy target but too little too late does he learn that he's the one who's been getting played with right from the start in a twisted game of seduction and murderous conquest that she's been doing for a long time... The second one was a lot more predictable, with Black playing a woman with a rather unhealthy case of split personality disorder who essentially kills herself, or the sinful part of herself that she hates, with voodoo nonetheless! Then there's the third tale, which definitely makes the whole movie and realistically is probably why it's even remembered, in which she plays a real doormat of a woman who is even dreadfully put upon and dominated by her own mother, I love how the opening scene establishes a sense of unease before anything even happens just by the 'offness' of the relationship between Amelia and her mother, and it plays brilliantly into the chilling end which was a great way to wrap up the movie, with the possessed Amelia crouching in a very in your face animalistic way and grinning evilly as she awaits her unwitting visitor... It's not my era but I bet a ton of kids growing up in the seventies had nightmares of pint-sized killer fetish dolls possessed by bloodthirsty spirits that stabbed with a spear, gnashed their razor sharp teeth while making the rabid Speedy Gonzales noises, and attacked poor Karen Black relentlessly! Stabbing it back doesn't work, neither does trapping it or drowning it, and baking it in the oven backfires horribly! I think it still does a great job of selling the illusion that she's being mauled by the tiny assassin as she holds it to herself and bodily throws herself all over the place, Black was great at the physical stuff. The whole segment is very suspenseful and creepy, and you can easily see where it influenced the movies like Child's Play and Puppet Master, and who knows, maybe it even helped to create the terrific horror sub genre of the small creature on a murderous rampage as we know it! I genuinely love this spirited little movie, it's kind of quaint and old fashioned, but that's part of the charm for me, it has a good nostalgic aspect to it. I think that the 70s produced some of the best horror anthologies ever, and this one makes for a satisfying watch and is a real distinctive gem by Dan Curtis, classic macabre fun! X

What in the name of sanity did I just watch? Basically "Trilogy of Terror" is a film with a very short runtime (1 hr 12 mins) that is broken up into three separate short stories, the main character in each is played by Karen Black. As the name suggests, these short stories are horror, or meant to be horror anyway, I found nothing from any of the stories to be particularly frightening, very camp and very lame is what they are. The first story, titled "Julie" is about a high school kid asking his English teacher out, she agrees to go to the drive-in movies with him, only to be drugged and photographed, then blackmailed..., this story takes a clever turn towards the end, if another word for clever was lame. The second story is about feuding sisters (both played by Karen Black, neither sisters share a scene together to get around that one), in what felt like a poor rip off of "Whatever happened to Baby Jane?", anyhow in the end with the help of some voodoo, the one sister is able to kill the other off, yawn, boring. The final story is the most famous one, as for how it's become so famous is absolutely beyond me..., is this pathetic tribal doll meant to be scary or something? The story and the 'fear-factor' is so camp it made me cringe, the first three quarters of the story is boring and nothing happens other than 'suspense building', you only get to see the doll in action for the last couple of minutes of the film, waste of time, and anything but scary! It's an awful film, or film's, or whatever you want to call it, B-movie horror films, probably C-movie actually..., this is obviously where the Simpson's drew their inspiration for the Treehouse of Horror episodes from, only the Simpson's long running versions are far superior than this load of tripe.

Karen Black really stands out in this movie of strange happenings. In "Trilogy of Terror", her personality really shines through. In the segment of "Julie", she may look like someone who is tried to her work. Just to say, don't let that look fool you. One student tried his best to make her a part of a scandal. Somehow, that plan backfires. BeBecause at the end, he ended up being the statistic, not her. In the segment of "Millicent and Therese", you deal with sisters: one's a prude, the other, a wild child. Dealing with family trauma, of course when the real deal is a female version of "Jekyll & Hyde". And the last segment is "Amelia". This one is classic! Here you got a woman with mother issues, after she buys a Zuni fetish doll, she called her. After the hang up, the gold chain falls off, without her knowing it. All of the sudden, the doll comes alive, and attack her savagely. This one tops it all. Made back in the mid 70's, it wasn't all that cheesy. It was simple though. Still not kid friendly. A good way to remember Karen. 3 out of 5 stars.

'Trilogy of Terror' tells three different scary stories, each with Karen black in the lead role. These stories are well put together, and each have a eerie little twist at the end of them that left me shocked, and in one story, creeped out. In the first story "Julie", we meet a high school jock type of guy named Chad who wonders what his teacher Julie looks like under all of the stuffy clothes she wears. Julie has the whole librarian look going on. She has her hair up in a bun always, glasses on, multiple layers of clothing, etc. Chad becomes almost obsessed with her, and comes up with a sick scheme to drug and take photos of Julie half naked in bed as a way to blackmail her into sleeping with him and doing what he wants. It's not too long after that we discover Julie isn't all she seems, and that leads to a well put together twist. The next is called "Millicent and Therese", both of whom are sisters who have nothing in common. Millicent is the good girl with morals, values and no make-up. Therese is basically a sexually suggestive woman who uses her sexuality and looks to get what she wants. Anyways, Millicent tells a story which paints Therese as their mother's killer and makes out as if Therese sold her soul to Satan. We the viewers soon get a better insight into the two sisters and their personality when their psychiatrist comes on, and realize that not all that Millicent has said is true...The third and final story is the most terrifying, it's called "Amelia". Amelia is a happy young woman who lives on her own in a high rise apartment building. She's gotten a Zuni fetish doll shipped to her which she planned to give to her boyfriend as a gift, he studies anthropology. The doll comes with a scroll which states this specific doll is possessed by the spirit of a Zuni hunter named "He Who Kills"...and once you remove the gold chain from around it's neck, it will kill again. The chain accidentally comes off, and it goes after Amelia in her apartment leading to a genuinely scary ending.'Trilogy of Terror' is a good made for TV movie from the 70's, I lied it for it's interesting conclusions to each tale. Even if the story was a little weak or slower moving, the twist at the end saves it. For example, I thought the first two stories lacked compared to the third, but the endings saved them! Karen Black was magnificent in all of her roles in each story, this movie had to have a strong actress to make it work and she did. I highly recommend this one.8/10
