Synopsis

80-year-old Thomas recounts his childhood and middle age through a series of flashbacks and dream sequences. Thomas believes he’s been taken away from a better life at birth; following a hospital fire, he vividly recalls being swapped with another new-born, and subsequently grows up in a poorer neighbouring household.

DarthBotto My God! You people actually gave this movie something higher than 3? This was a disgusting and queer piece of work. You can't even find what the storyline for this movie was in the first place! If you see yourself as an idiot, then go to Blockbuster and wow yourself with a film that could be shot in the 60s. Yes, you heard me- the 60s! You have a little perverted brother sleeping and washing his older sister, you have a nut for a dad saying, "Boom, Chick-a-Chick-a-Chick-a-Boom! Blah-dad-de-de-da-de!" Plus, when Toto's all grown up, he starts seeing another woman just because she's a lot like his sister who blew up! The weirdest scene by far was the Conclusion. It had Toto laughing and giggling as a pile of ash, it showed a chicken, a ship and a whole lotta things that are played in the song.I suggest that if you find this description amusing, you should watch the movie and decide for yourself.
davidgarvoille If you loved this film, and most people do, please help get the word out that this movie should be released for Region 1 DVD (US). I was able to find this on Region 2 DVD on Amazon.fr (Amazon France) but it was out of stock. What to do when the movie you love is unavailable?!?I also recommend getting yourself a Charles Trenet cd who's song "Boum!" is used for the dancing tulips. I believe that he was a traitor during Nazi occupation, siding with the puppet French government...but he did remake his name before his death. And yes, what a pity this director hasn't made more films. What gives? If you like this film, you might also like The Hairdresser's Husband which came out around the same time.
ThurstonHunger A hearty recommendation for this film, which deftly kaleidoscopes time. Three actors portray one life at various age stages, through them we see the innocence of childhood and the guilt of autumn years are two sides of the same coign of vantage. The creative imagination of the protagonist (and the director) are well framed...and it was reassuring that some of the magic that our hero, Thomas, felt as a child stays with him throughout his life, and this film.Minor caveats for people who1) dislike non-linear time in a film2) voice-over narrationBut the distinct actors/times make #1 no problem here, better yet the dissolves between them are often lyrical...and I think more accurate to how we remember our time in this world.Reaffirmed my belief of the power in charged details (shoes in a closet, a pop tune, candy wrappers) and my faith in the beautiful complexity of a simple life.
cinergy Jaco Van Dormael conjures up (he was a magician and a clown) one of those films that because of their formal beauty and intelligent content deserve to be seen more often but are not. The film is full of internal echoes, images that resurface under different contexts, and make you rethink them again and again (dare I say like in Citizen Kane?). As if that were not enough, there are many other resonances to genres and specific films that will make film buffs laugh with excitement: quotations to gangster films, to Hitchcock, to Bunuel, etc. are all there to be discovered and enjoyed. Alan Moore would be smiling at the construction of this beautiful crystal web that is the narrative of this film. See it and rejoice...
