atlasmb Tom Cruise is "Maverick", the fighter pilot who likes to play by his own rules, and Kellie McGillis is "Charlie", the savvy civilian contractor who advises the Navy on technical aviation matters. They attempt an unusual courtship between testosterone-fueled scenes of dogfights and brinksmanship. The music is dynamic, the photography is beautifully colorful, and the supporting cast is a who's who of handsome actors from the 80s. Meg Ryan also has a significant, though brief, supporting role. This is a rather iconic film-in part for its place in Cruise's filmography, and also for its quotable lines and memorable scenes. It exudes a certain chic due to its use of fast vehicles and classic fashion choices. This is one of the best known films of its decade.
adonis98-743-186503 As students at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school compete to be best in the class, one daring young pilot learns a few things from a civilian instructor that are not taught in the classroom. Top Gun is heartfelt, emotional and fun thanks to great direction, Tom Cruise's charm and lots of great 80's music and to be honest, i still don't get it how critics hated this film it's just freaking awesome. (10/10)
vijaybavalatti Its a movie based on US navy elite fighter weapons training and a pilot who has some skills that many pilots wont. Maverick and his friend goose are sent for training in TOP GUN where the best of the best pilots come out and are ready for real action in wars. Maverick is not an ordinary pilot, he doesn't follow rules but has some skills which makes him noticeable by instructors. The movie goes normal till his friend dies during training and maverick feels responsible for it and wants to quit. But in the end he joins the team and gets into real action.Tom cruise gives the right performance for the role. The main drawback for the movie is that the story is predictable. The first half feels normal and nothing is special in it. In the second half, aircraft fights and action keep audience alive. Apart from the story, screenplay is simple and good. Overall the movie keeps you both bored with a simple story line and also gives some nail biting action sequences for action lovers.
digitalbeachbum This movie is a time vault of 80's nostalgia. It is Miami Vice on military grade steroids with its catch phrases, male macho orgasms and Hollywood myths. It is every thing John Wayne represented in the 40's and 50's on westerns and war movies, but set in the 80's.Top Gun is a movie about a character named Maverick and is played by a young Tom Cruise. Maverick is a loose cannon who causes lots of problems, including a death of a friend. He doesn't like following rules or being a team player. Hence the name, Maverick. While the casting is perfect for this movie, the direction and the script is filled with too many factual errors. There is also the problem with stereotypical representation of women and Russians. It is 100% pro-American and anti-everything not American.I saw this movie in 1989 when I was at Parris Island. My platoon had just won the rifle range and our SDI promised us a day off on Sunday. That morning he rolled in a cart with a small screened television and a VCR. In popped a pirated copy of an unknown movie. We huddled around the television with the opening scenes. We all cheered, hooted and hollered. It was a grand moment for us.However after 27 years I watched it again and could not bear even a few minutes of the movie. I could see all types of visual flaws in the movie, such as the opening statement which uses the word "insure" rather than "ensure". facepalm. The movie is OK, I just do not like it. As a young kid in the Marines it was wonderful because I was a brainwashed kid ready to go off to war with what ever enemy I was told to point my gun. I didn't care if the acting was terrible or if the technical errors existed in the movie. I just wanted to see T&A of Kelly McGillis and fighter jets. This movie does not stand the test of time. In the coming decades it will be forgotten like many movies from the 20's and 30's. It isn't amazing and it isn't Oscar worthy except for some technical aspects.
