Thrashin' is the age old story about a boy who falls in love with the rival gang leaders sister, with skateboards, and bodacious haircuts and clothing.Plotwise, it's really nothing new, a sort of West Side story struggle, with the conclusion ultimating in a race called the LA Massacre, which just involves lots of people on Skateboards going really fast.If Corey wins this race, he will become the face of Smash Skates or some other name. The thing is, The daggers leader doesn't like Corey going out with his sister, so he invites him to 'joust' which involves them chasing each other with a small bean bag on a stick.Corey breaks his arm, ooooo, I wonder if he will win and become friends with the brother and get the girl at the end? I really don't know....It's a typical eighties movie, made watchable by the likable cast and the admittedly good stunt-work and editing. We have the usual breaks in plot to show off the fancy moves, and the fianl sequence involves lots of people flying in the air and landing in trees.Brolin is great as the lead, and it's bright fun stuff to watch.

Josh Brolin lights up the screen in this brazen commentary about skateboard rivalries on beach-front properties. The movie is called "Thrashin" and its about skating hardcore tournaments, hardcore pools, and hard-core chilli pepper pits. The movie begins with Brolin exploding out of his bedroom and cross-countrying his way to L.A. Now this is back in the eighties when skateboards were built like tanks. Big wheels, big trucks, big huge fish tail and a flat nose. Skateboarding looked a lot cooler back then, check out the kid with the Diet Slice shirt on at the pool tournament! Brolin has a love interest in the movie played fittingly by Pamela Gidley who was riding a torrent of fame after being named Hottest hottie of the year in Seventeen magazine. The problem is Pam's brother is the leader of the Daggers and shes been told not to cross the line with any Val's. This movie is one of the first about skating to go mainstream and would be shadowed by Slater's "Gleaming the Cube" later in the decade. What Thrashin does well is not take itself too seriously, if you liked this you'd probably love "Under the Boardwalk" which is basically the same movie with surfboards. The re-release is awesome packed with extra features and a commentary track that's hilarious. So take the night off and burn some rubber to this acid droppin daddy, you will not be disappointed. Ten skirts.

If you were a skater punk in the 80's and loved everything Neon, OR you like skating Fat Decks in pools, this movie is for you. If you are an Ebert or a Fat Tony Hawk video game nerd chances are it's not your cup of tea, it's that simple. I was waiting along time for this DVD to be released and when I finally got it, I was so pleased. Watching this disc with the commentary on gets it a nomination of sorts for a comedy commentary award with Robert Rusler, Josh Richmond, Alan Sacks & Steve Olson tearing it up in a drunken blaze of glory. Lace up the Vision high tops, slap on the pink grip tape and shred. P.S. The Daggers will own your soul!!!

If you take everything seriously and have a hard time finding something funny if it doesn't readily involve someone you've seen on MTV or lots of cussing, please don't see this movie. This is the kind of movie that you have to realize right away how bad it is. That's why it's a well loved film, it's so awful it's genius. It's just funny to watch them cruising down the sidewalk pulling little acid drops off of ledges, power sliding, and most of all the carving. It was all downright gnarly back then, and there's these 10 minute clips of them just tearing it up down the street, terrorizing all the citizens. If that part is at all lacking, the skateboard joust makes up for it. I kid you not, two rival gangs fight the best way they can: tie some boxing gloves to a stick and some string and try and knock each other off their boards. And they're dead serious about it, they steez out in war paint and everything. It's amazing. After that some stuff gets burnt down, and then we see a lot of pros and other sick kids ride some bowls and that's all way cool and nostalgic and whatever. The main kid gets the girl and then somehow ends up in a massive downhill race, and you get to see him train for it all Rocky style. He even has duct tape on his hands, kid goes full mechanism. If you actually want to watch it for the plot I won't ruin it for you (although it wouldn't be hard, since there really is none). This is a life changing experience, you'll be a better person if you sit through it.
