A24 is fast becoming my go to studio for intruiging, and often under-rated horror movies, and The Witch fits the bill. This movie was really quite impressive in it's realism to the time it was set, so much so, you could honestly believe this story did happen. The characters were expertly portrayed, and all tragic but fascinating, so you actually are invested in what happens to them. The scares in this film are sparse but well-earned. Eggers spends most of this movie building tension so that the few scenes in which he wishes to terrify, he succeeds exceptionally. I went into this with high expectations and was not disappointed. The Witch is a dense, complex, and deeply unsettling movie, but because of that, it is truly brilliant.

New England, 1630: a puritanical family living in the wilderness are tormented by dark forces.Robert Eggers, director and scribe of The VVitch, thou displeaseth me with thy movie: I commend thee for thy dedication to realism, but authentic production design, gloomy cinematography and oft incomprehensible period dialogue maketh not for an enjoyable experience.I wished to take my leave soon after the start, though I continued perchance matters improved. This was not to be! I bade thee, list' not to the positive reviews that laudeth this film, for I speak aright when I say that The VVitch doth make thine eyes heavy and time standeth still.By the end, thou will hath endured much tedium, but I ask thee 'for what?'. Naught in the way of scares, I tell thee, but many a yawn.

This is not a horror movie in any ordinary sense. This is an exploration of the witches fable, and a movie that works on many levels, and one nice piece of art at that. However, it is not terribly engaging though by no means it is boring either. It lacks true horrors and is underrated for that reason - it is not a cheap flick, but a work of love, love for the all thing TRUE about the puritan witch thing of the New England of the 17 century. It is a tale about a tale, and a very real making of a tale, that cost lives, about prejudice and worldview and the more one thinks about it, the better it seems. So yes, it is a good movie, for the thinking man, it is not striking but it is telling, well researched and most realistic portrayal of a mindset that created so much mythology and folk tales, from Brothers Grim, to Disneyland to the grim realities of the Salem whitchunts. It is carefully crafted, executed with love and precision, and has more substance than most horror movies. But it should not be mistaken for a horror movie - it does not quite work as one - it is a movie that explores its subject on much deeper levels.
