rickdumesnil this is not a academy award winning movie.....it was meant to make us laugh or at least smile. in my case it worked. the idea of the movie is well thought of and the actors and actresses are all good. sure its not serious material but the Adam Sander....Eddie Murphy.....will Farrell movies aren't either. i wouldn't see it too many times but i liked it. i think the people who hated it are either prudes or people with no sense of humour.......they prolly prefer pee wee Herman or Mr. bean. oh and i admire Paul Rudd....he can do anything. the sequence i like the least was WINONA RYDER part.....didn't make me laugh at all. did this movie do good at the box office....im french and i don't think the movie ever made it where i live. thank you
Ayal Oren It's a very deceptive film, so deceptive I almost stopped watching it about 20 minutes into the film. I don't do that, I hardly ever consider the option. Lucky thing is - I stayed with it, thinking - "it's supposed to be 10 different stories, maybe some would be good." I was wrong - It's not 10 different stories it's rarely is when the same director and writers are responsible for the whole lot. But the start does look like a series of bad SNL sketches. So stupid and surreal they seem to be there for the sheer provocation value. Irreverent to the point of sacrilegious, I don't mind either as long as there's a reason for the provocation, if it's just for provocation's sake - count me out. Well in this movie there is, but only when the stories start to connect you can begin to see the "whole picture". This takes very careful and clever writing, very deftly disguised under the utter senselessness of the stories. The amazing thing is the quality performance of most actors and actresses - it's hard to do when the story is so unreal. Two points I liked less about the film - not all the stories integrate so well into the complete pattern of things, and the sign off song. Yes it's cynical and witty as required, but it's like the writers didn't trust their audience to figure it all by themselves - if they didn't they probably wouldn't be there to see the final song and even if they did I'm not sure they'd be following the lyrics closely enough. Bottom line - it's not funny, it's not trying to be funny it's satirical and thought provoking and you'll see it too if you hang in there past the first 20-30 minutes.
EvolBob I really really wish IMDb would allow negative *stars*, maybe 'Bombs' to be awarded as well. Then this movie would get a -10! I checked the ratings here to see if it was worth-while to watch the rest of 'The Ten', and I'd like to say thank you to all the comment authors here, who have certainly helped me make up my mind.If I never see the rest of 'The Ten', it will be 21 minutes too soon! I think the 1 star I awarded is way too high!Lastly, how is a show that is a Comedy have spoilers, unless it is in the revealing of the punchline(s)? If that is the case, no one could for this stupid movie! Hmmmm..... is that a spoiler?
Superunknovvn Watching old Monty Python movies or "Kentucky Fried Movie" might lead to the assumption that silliness always equals good comedy which the right people will "get" while the others won't. Well, that assumption is wrong. Behind all surreal humor has to be some thought, some truth to make it funny. Monty Python and the minds behind KFM got that, the makers of "The Ten" didn't. There's no thought at all in this movie, just random, unfunny emptiness. What's fascinating is that producers could actually talk actors with a relatively good reputation into this. Paul Rudd, Adam Brody, Winona Ryder, Liev Schreiber, Oliver Platt, Janeane Garofalo and Gretchen Mol may not exactly be A-list actors in this day and age, but they sure are too good for this crap. I have no idea what Famke Janssen is doing acting in "The Ten", and Jessica Alba appearing here means that she was in TWO of this year's worst comedies (the second one being "The Love Guru"). Seriously, "The Ten" is so bad you just want to shout to God to make it stop. It's painfully unfunny and besides it doesn't have anything to do with the Ten Commandments, which somebody probably thought was funny in itself. It's not. Dammit, this is one annoying movie.
