Synopsis

The season's schedule for major league baseball affects the lives and moods of millions of Americans. Each year executives and managers ridicule the logic, sportswriters and broadcasters question the sanity, and athletes and fans cast blame. Yet not many people know how it is that the MLB schedule is figured out, and even fewer have any idea what is involved. The masterminds for 25 years behind this massive logistical undertaking were Henry and Holly Stephenson. A husband and wife duo working out of an upstairs bedroom in their Staten Island home with a computer, a pencil and a great deal of cooperation. How did this mom-and-pop team ever end up with the daunting and thankless job of MLB scheduling? This is the story of how the Stephensons landed their first MLB contract and became "The Schedule Makers."

Michael_Elliott 30 for 30 Shorts: The Schedule Makers (2013) Excellent entry in the series takes a look at the Major League Baseball schedule. I've often sat at the ballpark and wondered how exactly the schedule is made up and this 13-minute short gives us the basic idea. It's actually Henry and Holly Stehenson, a married couple living in MA who comes us with the schedule. They held this job from 1982-2005 when computers eventually took over and of course it proved that with technology errors can be had (Mariano Rivera finishing his career in Houston for example). This is a really terrific short that gives you the basic idea of how the schedules are done but some of the most interesting moments happen when they talk about some of the abuse they took for years because some of the big boy companies thought they could push around this "Mom and Pop" couple. Fans of baseball or sports in general will really want to check this one out.Episode: A
