I write reviews for each movie I see on my personal blog. Mostly for myself so I'll remember what I thought about it... When looking at a certain amount of movies I have almost forgot some completely. Writing has made me think in a more critical way. While thinking in a critical way (sort of) watching this movie I thought about positive and negative sides. Without making this up to be "the greatest movie ever made" I didn't really find any negative sides. I guess it takes a while before the plot to show itself.. But in that regard it's still better than many other movies. So that is a nitpick more than a definite negative comment.Samuel L. Jackson has become one of the biggest stars of our time.. Staring in movies like Star Wars and the most famous Quentin Tarantino movies. Despite this he still star in quite many smaller films. Some right down b-movies. Why? Don't know. But some of the less famous work are surprisingly good. This is definitely one of the better one's... It's actually one of the best movies I've seen in quite a while with only a few competitors. The environments look dark and fitting. Once the story gets going it is never predictable and yet never loose it's touch (just destroys what could been something really good). The movie is raw and far from the "child-friendly" bigger Hollywood-movies. Though the amount of nudity or violence isn't too much it's just a part of the story.. Like it should in a good movie! Before watching IMDb I thought this movie must surely have the rate "7/10" or higher. When seeing "5,6/10" I can't believe that I and the rest, who must put a quite low grade, watched the same movie. I've seen plenty "5-6/10" movies lately and this is just better in every sense.I highly recommend this to anyone!

This movie tries to remake the movie that serves you one of the all time greatest and most shocking plot twists ever, Oldboy (2003), although I personally like the 2013 US remake as the better version of it. Yet it went way than a bit too far. The movie has so many characters, leaving most of them severely under developed. Seeing how the title sounded, I was surprised how the main twist, presented quite prematurely, was then developed into a literally turn down of a climactic ending. This movie tries to show you some kind of alternate ending to the original movie, yet it fails, and quite miserably I'd say. Having Samuel L. Jackson is a great job as his acting kept the vibe of the movie enduring throughout the entire movie. Luke Kirby lacks so much in portraying the sleazy antagonist.

if you have watched the Korean film old-boy then you would realize that this film offers nothing new. plot is exactly the same except the film is a bit on the dramatic side. its not that violent compared to the Korean film.as far acting is concerned, it should be OK. Samuel Jackson in his normal comfort zone, no surprises there. i just wish they have developed the character more or give a little background story. as for the daughter, i haven't seen her on other movies but she can act. she was solid all through out the entire movie. if you plan to watch this film then make sure you haven't watched old-boy or you'll really be disappointed!PS. they will be doing a remake of the Korean movie and it will also starred by Samuel Jackson

Gritty Grifter Movie that is quite a nifty character study with some usual Neo-Noir twists and one not so usual. It has a commanding lead performance and more than reliable backups and a backdrop of cold Canada as the coarse climate conditions that feel fitting in this bleak environment of gangsters, con-men, and drug addicts. The fortune cookie philosophical quoting that begins and ends the film in narration is clumsy and not needed. It is hackneyed and feels like an overwritten overture. It makes very little sense in the story here and is a small but glaring flaw in this otherwise understated display of a quietly desperate Man whose fate is fatal and futile in the Film-Noir.This is not a comfortable situation and it is not meant to be. It is a cold world out there, especially for a recently released convict who served twenty-five years for murder. But in this Noir world the past is present and sins are rarely forgiven despite said paid debt to society. The Samaritan Grift is unfortunately uninteresting here and there is a sort of a thinly scripted rush as things unfold.
