Synopsis

Two journalists set out to document their friend's journey to reunite with his estranged sister. They track her to an undisclosed location where they are welcomed into the remote world of "Eden Parish," a self-sustained rural utopia composed of nearly two hundred members and overseen by a mysterious leader known only as "Father." It quickly becomes evident to the newcomers that this paradise may not be as it seems. Eden Parish harbors a twisted secret. What started as just another documentary shoot soon becomes a fight for survival.

Michael Ledo PLOT SPOILERSJake goes to visit his sister in a remote area as she has joined a cult, you know the type that looks like they drink Kool-Aid. Oops sorry about that. He takes with him two friends so they can make this look like a hand held camera documentary. This wasn't a real documentary. Did they have to end it the way I expected it to end from 5 minutes into the film? Ti West ever hear of a twist? Now having said that, the film did hold my interest. Even the boring interviews were well done. Then when they ended it all with orange flavor Koo-Aid, I had to groan...surely there is more....a twist...please!!! I need. I want.Apparently this was done for a whole new generation that knows nada about the Jonestown fiasco which inspired this film.Parental Guide: F-bomb. Implied sex. No nudity. No twist.
kalelakia This isn't a bad film, Its actually an OK cult movie. The main problem with the film is it lacks any actual new ideas. If you have seen or read anything about the Jim Jones cult you will automatically see this is a movie that took almost the whole story from that actual event. From the time the VICE crew gets off the helicopter to the point when its flying away, theses are all ideas and scenarios taken straight from the actual event. The film is fun to watch and the pacing is well. The actors do a good job and the leader of the cult does a great Jim Jones impression. The movie just suffers because you can watch an actual documentary of the Jim Jones cult and get a way more shocking story. But if you want a decent fun movie, give it a watch, I wouldn't say you would be wasting your time. 6/10.
blair_r Doesn't make sense, this film is a complete and total pile of rubbish. Mr West you should be embarrassed that you released this film. I am a huge fan of valley of violence and VHS so what happened here is beyond me. I'm actually lost for words I cant explain what is so bad with this film as there is nothing good about it........ Michael Radny The Sacrament is an obvious modern retelling of the horrible events of the Jonestown Massacre. It does a good job of including actual true elements and facts of the real People's Temple cult; this includes Father, being very much like the actual real life leader, Jim Jones. The found footage aspect is the best I've seen it from any other film, even though by this time, the concept is overused and cheap like. However, The Sacrament doesn't use the found footage to show the typical horror genre off, but more of a biographical thriller, which is why I believe this works better for this film. The Sacrament is a good film, which does suffer from some dull moments, but nonetheless it more then makes up for it at its climactic moment. It's a good watch, could be better, but one of the better so called 'horror' films that you will find in the modern era.
