As a person who had checked ratings for this movie in advance I didn't have high expectations, however I was pleasantly surprised :D.To summarise without giving away too many spoilers, it's about a girl called Dot who's deaf yet still manages to observe so much about the world around her. After some unfortunate events in her childhood she has to go live with her Godparents and their peppy blonde high-school cheering daughter. Pretty normal... It would seem. This movie contains plot twists, and I'm glad to say it wasn't all annoyingly given away in the trailer as a lot of movies are. This was a dark adult film, but I'll assure you it wasn't one of those films that left me dark and depressed afterwards- it really made me think about things. Saying that, I still wouldn't recommend it for those who are too light-hearted Although it wasn't amazing, I would still recommend watching this film to most people if you have some spare time. Well worth your while!

Similar to American Beauty, the 1999 Academy Award Winner for Best Picture, "The Quiet" is even more disturbing. For among its themes about disabilities, murder, hidden lesbianism, and inhumanity, it also features incest. The revelation about incest is no spoiler, as you will be able to pick it up early on. Teen Dot (Camilla Belle), a deaf-mute who lost both parents, moves into the three-member household of the Deer family: mother Olivia (Edie Falco), father Paul (Martin Donovan), and teen daughter Nina (Elisha Cuthbert). The family is troubled. Passive mom cannot seem to get dad's attention, no matter what she does, even if she strips down to her underwear. Olivia, addicted to prescription pharmaceuticals, may even be losing her mind. And, although both teen girls are very attractive, Nina treats Dot awfully. She is relentless about her actions, which continue in school among her friends. Nina is a virginal cheerleader who hangs out with annoying, trash-talking school chum Katy (Michelle Fell). Katy is hot for school basketball player Connor (Shawn Ashmore). Dot is a brooding introvert, an undeveloped personality who wears dull clothing and is friendless. Nina is also traumatized (but in an opposite way from Dot), and finds an unusual way of coping. Over time, despite their appearances as polar opposites, there is a gradual erosion of detachment. In fact both young ladies actually have much in common, and even share double lives. Meanwhile Dot harbors a secret that completely alters events once it is revealed, but it won't happen early on. Meanwhile, daddy is an ogre and admits it. The title of course refers to Dot, the heroine of the movie. People think she is oblivious to the world situation, but she sucks up information like a sponge. The incest scenes are very painful to stomach. Like "American Beauty" before it, the film parodies the dysfunctional family. But then again, the acting is fine all around, and the character development is well-done. And note the symbolism, the darkened rooms of the household and the rooms almost devoid of furniture. They tell us of the sinister secrets lurking about. On the other hand, what is the purpose of this movie? Where is it supposed to be heading? Although there are eerie elements, the sordid story is not really exciting. And the ending, although there is a twist, is not exactly uplifting.

okay, first things first. what grabbed my attention with this movie was of course the actresses.Camilla Belle and Elisha Cuthbert. i wont lie, both gorgeous and attractive. When I seen them in a movie together, yep chuck it on the watchlist, most likely get to it one day.then BAM, wow, didn't expect that, these actresses can actually act. surprised?? YES For some reason this movie touched me in so many ways. Once the movie started, i didn't think much of it. Dot (Camiila) doing her thing and Nina (Elisha) doing what she does best. But yes they grew on me, their characters i felt for. yes i got involved.I'm not going to give away spoilers, but from about 20 minutes into the movie, i found myself looking at the time to see how many minutes are left because i didn't want it to end. both characters had very sad stories, both two different people, both involving their dads.If you are a person who watches a movie, and loves stories, gets involved in it and the characters, you must watch this.the only downside, is that it could have been longer, maybe a scene or two at the beginning of the film where you see Dot and her father, and how he died and so on.Other than that.. Im speechless, wow. haven't gave a 10 in a while. Feels good to be back enjoy people. Great acting great story Great feeling Great rating :)

The deaf and dumb teenager Dot (Camilla Belle) is adopted by the Deer family after the death of her father in an accident, and her seventeen year-old stepsister Nina (Elisha Cuthbert) gives a cold treatment to her, humiliating Dot in the high-school and at home. Nina's mother Olivia (Edie Falco), who is addicted in pills, was a close friend of Dot's mother and her husband Paul (Martin Donovan) is a successful architect. While living with the Deers, the invisible Nina discovers that they are actually a dysfunctional family with a dark secret that approaches her to Nina that also has discovered that Dot has a hidden secret. The classy and erotic "The Quiet" was a great surprise for me, with a dense and solid drama about an unpleasant theme incest that is unusual in American movies. Camilla Belle, Elisha Cuthbert, Martin Donovan and Edie Falco give top-notch performances, and the talented actress and pianist Camilla Belle is responsible for part of the stylish music score, playing Beethoven on the piano. The powerful story about invisibility and secrets may be controversial or polemic for many viewers, disturbing for others, but never disappointing. My vote is eight.Title (Brazil): "O Preço do Silêncio" ("The Price of the Silence")
