One of my favorite movies ever,I saw this at a drive in in Queens that's long gone. This film had a huge influence on me, especially in my writing. One man, trying to survive against overwhelming odds, one scientist, facing Luddite mutants, the remnants of a humanity turned by germ warfare. Heston is excellent as Robert Neville, the lone uncontaminated survivor of a germ war that has destroyed most of humanity. Of course he meets others and he is basically the savior of humanity. Yes, this film has some flaws, but it's so damn entertaining - and far superior to Will Smith's version (I don't blame him but does anyone who adapts a screenplay from a book even read the damn book anymore? See: I AM LEGEND and THE HOBBIT for two prime examples of how NOT to adapt anything). Full of action and excitement - this will always be one of my favorite movies.

OK, this movie can be entertaining because of Heston. The writing is crap. The cinematography is crap. Just plain awful. The acting was fine. But not great. I saw this movie last year on recommendation that it was good. It's not. It can be entertaining like watching the old TV batman shows. But seriously. It's like a student film. I remember seeing The Last Man on Earth with Vicent Price years ago and that's why I saw this mess. Then I got a copy of The Last Man on Earth, amazing. The dread was there from the beginning to the ending church death scene. That is a great movie. Then I read the book "I am Legend", a great book. Last Man on Earth is close to the book. Then I saw I Am Will Smith, the worst pile of garbage, right along side Fart Wars 7, the Farce Awakens, and Avengers, Thor, and any # of new so called films. I'm not even going to see the Dark Tower, because apparently it has nothing to do with the books, it just takes the names and a few characteristics. So, now onto the Omega Man. Charlton Heston was a fine actor. But he should have had veto power. If you like 60's TV and can forgive the camera work and the garbage writing and just want to see some wild scenes then you may be able to enjoy this. There are some decent scenes here and that is why it's not getting a 1. If I rate it compared to Last Man or the book it would be a negative. I am Will Smith basically takes Hestons Omega Man and builds into some more modern day cartoon show. That is pure crap.Omega Man, rating D, or 3 stars, for some eerie scenes, but mostly boring amateur crap. Better to read the book, or watch Last Man on Earth (disregard the B/W and funky dubbing, the dread is there)

I personally enjoy all these film adaptations of Richard Matheson's novel, but The Omega Man is by far my favorite of the three. This stars Hollywood icon Charlton Heston, who was on a roll during this period(late 60's/early70's) with one dystopian science fiction classic after another. The Omega Man is by far the most action packed of the lot. Charlton Heston is the last man on Earth, he rolls around town in style with a muscle car and submachine gun. In this post apocalyptic action classic the population of the world was wiped out by a plague caused by biological warfare. Those who have survived are albino mutants known as The Family who are nocturnal and shun technology and blame technology for destroying the world. Which puts our hero Neville(Heston), man of science on their hit list. Heston fortunately has a well balanced gun collection and usually handles his intruders with ease. He does find another group of uninfected survivors which includes foxy lady Rosalind Cash, who was a fine piece of dark chocolate and sexy mamma. Heston and Cash get down and broke taboos of interracial relationships for the time period.(Or at least their characters did in the film) As far as I am concerned The Omega Man has pretty much nothing not to like about it. It is well made, well acted , nicely shot and filled with social commentary, action and one liners. The Omega Man is action packed, thought provoking and at times funny. While Charlton Heston was one of the best actors to have ever lived and had success in many different genres, he is in my opinion best in science fiction and The Omega Man is essential and a classic.

Yes, it's cheesy at times. Charlton "doomsday" Heston began his sci-fi trek in the 70's and gave us 3 great movies, of which this is one. I love the pithy One-Liners that began with this flick, and are now a staple. Heston was a leader of the Civil Rights movement in Hollywood, and so we have a great interracial dynamic created by the producers when the last man finds the last woman. Anthony Zerbe is fantastic as his nemesis, and Rosalind Cash was a new performer but did everything she could with this role. There are some great plot twists and tons of irony. The fantasy that you are the Last Man on Earth is a powerful one, done perfectly for this film. The ending imagery was a little over the top, but fitting. And the divergence from the novel about zombies to germ warfare was great. Loved it.
