It's an enjoyable adventure movie because of it contains action , sensational outdoors and outlandish exciting situations abound . It deals with a group of men are on safari , one of the party refuses to give a gift to a tribe they encounter . The tribe is offended and it takes a disastrous turn and our starring (Cornel Wilde who was ill through much of the shooting and evacuated to a hospital for treatment but he followed) winds up unarmed and nude . As African natives (Ken Gampu as Leader of the warriors) give prisoner headstart before they close in on him for pursue . Stripped, turned loose like a wild beast , being relentlessly chased by a violent group who keeps on his heels . There takes place a deadly hunt of man versus nature and man versus man .A tour-de-force adventure drama that brought Cornel Wilde real acclaim as a filmmaker . This is a moving manhunt of indescribable terror and screaming suspense . It is remarkable as well as competently made and it packs strong fights , spectacular sequences and remarkable brutal images ; creating a large impact on Italian sub-genre : ¨Mondo Cannibale¨. Good acting by Cornel Wilde as safari leader pursued by a large bunch of native warriors determined to finish him off . Cornel Wilde was careful to try to avoid harm to animals appearing in the film where possible. In the scene where the python and the monitor lizard battle, it became clear that the python was winning and the monitor was in danger ; Wilde personally intervened to save the monitor lizard; the lizard bit him on the leg, refusing to let go. We are seeing several African animals though some of them turn out to be taken from prior stock-shots . The script was originally a true historical incident about a trapper named John Colter being pursued by Blackfoot Indians in Wyoming, but lower shooting costs, tax breaks and material and logistical assistance offered by South Africa convinced Cornel Wilde and the other producers to shoot the film there . Colorful as well as evocative cinematography in Panavisión by R. Thomson . Appropriate musical score by means of drummers and African sounds . This harrowing motion picture was compellingly starred , written , produced and directed by Cornel Wilde . Wilde does a competent job both as actor and filmmaker . I's amazingly well done movie , being Cornel Wilde's best film . He is especially credited as a good actor but also known for directing some acceptable flicks . His later films were of varying quality, and he ended his career in near-cameos in minor adventure films . As he directed adventures as ¨Maracaibo¨ ,¨Lancelot and Guinevere¨, ¨Sharks' Treasure¨ but also Noir Cinema as ¨The Devil's Hairpin¨, ¨Storm Fear¨ and Sci Fi : ¨Blade of Grass¨. ¨The naked prey¨ rating : Notable , well worth watching . Essential and indispensable seeing for adventure/action fans . It's a good stuff for young people and exotic adventures lovers who enjoy enormously with the extraordinary danger in the lush jungle.

The setup for this film is probably one of the most basic that you are likely to come across; A group of men are on safari and are hunting elephants for their ivory. Along the way, they encounter a tribe and one of the group offends the natives by refusing to give a gift or 'trinket' to them and arrogantly presses on. The tribe of natives don't take this matter lying down and surround the safari hunters and start to kill them off one by one; they do, however, allow one man known simply as 'The Man' (portrayed by Cornel Wilde) to survive and give him a head start and begin hunting him. This is minimalist film making and it's all the more enjoyable for it. The plot is simple and the film moves at a brisk pace and never really loses momentum. After the first 15 minutes or so, there is very little dialogue, but it doesn't really matter that much as the tension and suspense in The Naked Prey more than compensates for the lack of dialogue. There also isn't much in the way of character development, but again this doesn't harm the film as the audience will automatically empathise with and connect to 'The Man' due to the plight that he finds himself in.Cornel Wilde (the protagonist) also directed this feature and I felt that his direction was pretty good; there were some lovely shots of the beautiful scenery. There were also some lovely shots of the various wildlife which inhabited the area (Wilde showed most of these scenes as 'cut scenes', the point of which still eludes me, but the photography was beautiful so it's not really a complaint). In summary, this is minimalist entertainment which makes the most of its relatively low budget by providing the viewer with a consistently engaging and tense thriller. The film really comes into its own when it's just 'The Man' against the group of tribal nativities and it turns into a classic 'cat and mouse' thriller which becomes a case of 'hunt or be hunted' for our protagonist. Whilst, I wouldn't go as far as saying that it was an 'edge of your seat thriller' it was still a decent film. If you are a fan of 'cat and mouse thrillers' then you won't be disappointed.

Being a very big fan of Apocalypto I eventually (my brother actually did) stumbled upon The Naked Prey. A flick that Apocalypto shares many similar ideas with. I'm sure there have been films between the two and possibly a film that came before The Naked Prey that tackles similar premises and/or ideas. But nevertheless, I jumped at the chance to check out The Naked Prey as soon as I got the chance. And I'm glad I did.The Nakey Prey is about a unique individual; an ivory hunter with a heart of gold. Our lead character, known as The Man, is working together with a drunken money hungry fool to collect ivory, aka kill elephants. By the way, you do see Elephants die, so that's a downer. Anyways, not long into the film the Man and his traveling team of hunters and helpers are wrangled up and tortured and some, killed. This is when the story of Apocalypto comes into play. The Man is now set loose for our Pursuers to use as game. But obviously things don't go as planned. It's pretty simple, but is one of my favorite premises for an action/adventure film. I love it, and if you do too, then you should also check this flick out.The film is basically silent throughout, as our lead barely talks once he's on the run. You hear the pursuing bushmen speak to one another but, the movie isn't subtitled so you're not in the know of what they're actually saying. Though, it doesn't take a genius to understand what they're saying to one another though. It's all done very well. The pursuers and our lead all play their parts as good as you basically want them to, and there's even a bit of sly humor thrown in.My only "gripes" to the film is sometimes there is a lull in pace. I would have loved some more intense chases, which there are a couple, but not enough for this bum. And I also thought the scenes of all types of animals fighting with one another was slightly over done. It just felt like the movie was trying to get deep too often. At points I was also wondering if they were going to show every dangerous animal that lived in Africa. No hippos, unfortunately. But this is a minor gripe, as a animal buff it was cool seeing rare footage of animals. So if you dig Apocalpyto, chase flicks, solid classic adventure films, this is one flick that you should seek out. Definitely worth it. It's also worth it to see the car in the background driving in the middle of the bush.

It was interesting to speculate on the differences in this film from 1966, to one made in modern times (by anyone other than Mel Gibson, who is, shall we say, outside the Hollywood mainstream) It is refreshing to see savage tribes portrayed unapologetically as savage tribes. (Contrast with Dances With Wolves) Also, unthinkable in a more modern film was the matter-of-fact shooting of elephants captured on film. The PETA folks would be outraged. The acting was mostly superb, from Cornel Wilde, and also the men and women playing the African natives. (From their names in the credits, many of them, of course, WERE African natives, but were playing roles from a century in the past) It's worth checking out.
