Believe it or not, this was the movie that introduced me to Jet Li. I was immediately hooked. I've read reviews that discredit the dub into English, but I found it easy to overlook this -- in fact, I found it to be somewhat hilarious. This film has all the makings of a great movie. There are no sub-plots that do not get resolved. The servant who always bawls whenever Jet Li's character get's set to go away for a minute or two is downright hilarious. That's one of the unique things about this movie: with so much drama they managed to make a hilarious movie, as well. As usual, the kung fu is extraordinary. In particular, there are a few scenes in which the opponents face off and the camera takes a moment to pause and let the viewer see the poses from a brilliant perspective. This will always be one of my favorite Chinese films.

Around the late 80's and early 90's, Jet Li was on a roll. Fresh from the success of Once Upon A Time In China, he moved straight into this movie, and in turn crafted 2 masterpieces in succession. The simple story of Jet Li's forced marriage is run parallel to the more adventurous tale of a secret sect or revolutionarys fighting against the emperor. It sounds like they should clash, but instead they run in and out of eachother with a crafted elegance so that you're always engaged by it.And of course if thats not enough for you there's the fights, which are Cory Yuens best to date. The coordination displayed in these amazing stunts is superb, and reflects each character marvellously. For example, Jet Li's playful and young Fong Sai Yuk is a far cry from his serious and restrained Wong Fei-Hong from his Once Upon A Time series, and so the fighting style is different to reflect that. He moves a lot more playful, cracks jokes between punches and it is a marvel to behold. It is one of the funniest and entertaining films out there, and is a definite must see for all martial arts fans.

The dubbing is poor on the American version, The fights are over-the-top and the acting is average. It is your typical brilliant martial-arts movie. Never have I watched a movie where my jaw has dropped constantly during the fight sequences. The closeness the fighters got the better the fights were. The combats were absolutely superb. The fight coordinator needs all the recognition he deserves. You can sum upthis film in one word: cool.

Essentialy a kung fu comedy, this film was quite enjoyable. Jet Li and especially Josephine Siao give good comic performances and the martial arts while extremely silly and unbelievable are very well done. Two problems prevent this film from being a martial art classic for me. Director Corey Yuen or the cinematographer for some reason shot much of the film with medium shots with a wide angle lens. This has the effect of obscuring the action in the many fight scenes. The last thing anyone should do is obscure Jet Li moving around. Also the film starts with a very graphic fight scene and ends with several comic characters getting killed. This is very out of line with the lighthearted nature of the rest of the film.Otherwise it's a great rental. Get it on DVD if you can.
