Xenia I do not understand why there are so many bad reviews. The film is very good.I was intrigued by Emily Blunt's presence in the film so I downloaded it and was very surprised because it turned out to be so much better than I expected. There is one noteable thing about it - almost all the situations that are supposed to make you laugh are at least 1/3 unfunny as they are. This is a very believable quality about the film - it makes you look at life from a distance and understand that all those stupid actions and decisions that people make are just funny as hell. And with a little love you can even come to a happy-end (I don't think it's a spoiler, this is obviously not Macbeth, you knew a happy end was there). But this is what makes this film an actual challenge for some people. It is NOT PLEASANT. It does not put you into a dreamy or giggly state. It is actually quite raw, sarcastic and real. I do believe that we live in times when real things are considered unnerving and even evil. Some people would very much rather have safe spaces built in every corner of the city and not deal with reality. Well, in true love there are no safe spaces. True love makes you stay with a person through all the ugly things and through the funny things and through the good things, obviously.Acting is on spot. Everyone know that Emily Blunt is one of the most talented actresses of the generation, Jason Segel is handsome and compelling, support cast entertain you in every possible way. The dialogues are great. Everything sounds very natural.7 our of 10 - because 10 is Fellini and Visconti. One of the best modern chick flicks I've ever seen.
emalga I switched it off after 10 minutes as I was already bored. The minute 10 shows the engagement party moment: the dumb British lady can't speak because she keeps on crying, the groom's parents criticise their son, the bride's dad shows up with a young Asian while the mother is sitting on her own with a window look... To me, this scene defined the rest of the movie: another attempt to make the audience laugh with obsolete 90's jokes....wow, enough already. Jason Segel seems to constantly playing the role of a hopeless romantic dude who tries to looks great but constantly gets interrupted by people when it comes to keeping his lady: Russell Brand in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Lily's exes and mood swings in How I met Your Mother...the list goes on. Mind you, I'm aware that he is a very gifted artist and screenplay writer, but I think these talents can be used off camera. On behalf of my generation (born in the 80's)please innovate your humour and plot in your next movie!!
Julesecosse It is a giggle a minute, I thought that it was funny throughout the entirety. The humour probably doesn't translate universally and could offend some; as it is a tad inappropriate and not for general consumption. That is probably where Jason Segal has the slight edge, his take and comment on the present. I guess you have to push a bit to gain notice and differ from the herd. It does push the boundaries but does not exceed them in the manner of Borat for example. It's not crass or gross at all.Fun, but adults only, I wouldn't recommend it for children or those sensitive to political correctness.
Jacques Du Rand One of the most relevant films, for me anyway, in a long time. We seem to slowly exit the era of the single guy/girl with more emphasis in long term relationships taking a thematic lead. Having been in a long term relationship myself, I found this movie very honest and very relevant to the issues that really hinders two people that have managed to make it work on a internal level. One can argue the point of people that belong together, but as one character in this film points out, when you give up on the perfect partner, do not thing that they will not find some other lucky guy that manages to make it work as well, even if it won't be as good as it was with you. The world we live in has many challenges for couples and life is guaranteed not to be easy. This feature is a great example of just how challenging it can be and what it might take to see it through. It reminded me a little of The Breakup with as much maturity and insight. I really recommend this for anyone that would like a deeper look into what to expect out of life in a long-term relationship. Technically the movie has been made very subtlety and complements the story with good taste and nuance.
