vincentlynch-moonoi Here's my question: why isn't Zach Braff more successful? To me, he's got "it"! But then again, maybe he's too big for television, but not big enough for the movies. At any rate, I liked this film, although it wasn't "great"...just "good".In it, Zach and his wife (Amanda Peet) move to Ohio after Zach loses his job as a chef. In Ohio he can work for his father-in-law's firm...a rather yuppy-ish ad agency. Zach is going to be mentored by his wife's ex-bf, who is now a "cripple" (as Zach calls him)...or is he? The "cripple" is played by Jason Bateman, and his character is doing everything he can to sabotage Braff and steal his wife.Braff is very good here as the just a tad bit goofy husband who all too often works on hunch, rather than knowledge. Peet is a good balance as the wife. I personally don't see what others see in Jason Bateman, but he does fairly well here. Charles Grodin plays the father-in-law, and is good for the part. If Frank Sinatra ever wondered if Mia Farrow was a good actress...well, this film would have convinced him...she's not. There are also small parts for Amy Poehler and Fred Armisen. In terms of the story line, there are a couple of criticisms, though minor. First, when his car was gone...twice, why didn't he call a taxi instead of riding a bicycle (well the answer is that a bike is funnier...although not practical at all...who would do that?). And, maybe they make Braff's character just a little bit too much of a disaster at work.Nevertheless, this is an entertaining film and I enjoyed it. Nothing special...just good.
SnoopyStyle Tom (Zach Braff) and Sofia (Amanda Peet) are about to have their first kid. They're just scraping by until Tom gets fired from his kitchen job. They leave NYC so that Tom can work for his father in-law Bob (Charles Grodin)'s Ohio ad agency while she can stay at home with the newborn. Then, Tom has to work under the passive aggressive Chip (Jason Bateman), and Sofia is having a miserable time too.Zach Braff and Amanda Peet have pretty good comedic pedigree. They have a good 15 minutes start to this movie. Then they go to Ohio and run into an SNL skit. Tom puts it best. Chip has a darkness in him, and it's not funny. He's basically a black hole where all jokes go to die. Jason Bateman should stick to playing the good guy. If he goes dark, he might as well be a serial killer because he's not a funny bad guy.
jtindahouse This movie, without any exceptions really, gets steadily worse and worse until the point it becomes simply tedious to watch and frankly insulting. The clichés rattle out thick and fast, the predictability is so straightforward you don't even feel good when you get it right 10 out of 10 times and the character decisions are so ridiculous you'd be let down if you saw them on a nickelodeon show for 5 year olds. The saving grace is certainly Zach Braff, who we've learnt from Graden Sate and quite a few occasions in Scrubs, has a great ability to serious things up brilliantly whilst still having us consistently at fits at his antics and excellent line delivery. He can make the most straightforward line seem absolutely hilarious, Scriptwriters must love him. He has few chances to shine on this occasion but the chances he gets he ceases hole-heartedly. Amanda Peet and Jason Bateman were less than impressive and everyone else was just plain awful. It wasn't their fault mind you. They were given next to nothing to work realistically with.It can be tricky with these sorts of movies to keep the humor up and the story believable so the odd slip up is more than excusable. But not to this extent and particularly not when it's not even that funny. Braff fans are the only ones who will benefit from this movie and even they may feel slightly let down. Everyone else would be well advised to avoid at all costs.
prospeak I must say that i was pleasantly surprised by the way this movie turned out , and judging by the reviews . . . . i was just expecting an average flick . Well the story may not be the best in the world but the execution is good . Braff is in his 'scrubs' form. Jason Bateman is hilarious and so is the rest of the cast .There are quite a few laugh out loud moments in here , this flick has a nice mixture of subtle wit and slapstick . Why the other bad reviews then you ask ???? Well let's just say that the movie is not kind to the disabled and is pretty much a reminder of how we treat them differently( of course not in a bad way , but the 'extra niceness' is my point )and some people will detest that . Well summing it up it is a good movie which does not have gross out humor , a good cast , an o.k(if not a completely believable script) and is good for lightening up the mood on a weekend. ( 8 stars is overshooting but what can i say . . . i am a fan of scrubs and arrested development and the movie is way underrated )
